Enclosure for wh16ns60

Post by omk1980 »

Hey guys-

I have been using my wh16ns60 in a vantec nextstar dx usb 3.0 enclosure. I have been able to back up my uhd discs with some success but often get read errors. I've seen on these forums that external drives might not have the power to read some of the triple layered uhd's.

I was wondering if there was another enclosure that might be able to keep up with the power needs to rip these discs. I don't have a desktop that i can throw this drive into so i'm limited to an enclosure.

Thanks for your hlep.

If you are in the US look here:

If you are in EU I recommend a USB3 -> SATA adapter from Sharkoon instead of an enclosure.

Let me know.

The case is not your problem it has an external power supply the things you are reading about are for USB powered drives I have had many vantecs and they are fine the problem is either the disks or the drive and there are a lot of defective drives out there.

As a side note you could try another power supply for the vantecs anything with the same barrel plug and voltage will work just make sure it is the same or better amperage

Yeah it is externally powered. I've backed up a fair share of discs already w/o issues. Suspect bad discs. Does it matter if it's plugged into the USB 3.0 or 2.0 port?

Oh wow! In your opinion, what is the most reliable and consistent drive ? I was thinking of buying a second one.

i have actually had the best luck with BU40Ns i think only one bad one and it didn't get read errors just never ripped faster than 4x normal BU40N rip at 6x
but the WH14NS40 with WH16NS60 1.00 firmware is good too

by far the most defective drives i have gotten have been the Asus BW-16D1HT and LG WH16NS60

I was thinking of getting the bu40n but my laptop optical Bay is 12.7mm so it won't fit. I was looking at the vantec enclosure nst-510s3 and it looks good, but it doesn't look like it's externally powered. Don't a lot of these drives give errors on uhd discs due to power requirement issues?

I just picked up a WH16NS60. I will be using it with my Macbook so will need an external 5.25" enclosure. I have an older ASUS BW-12D1S-U LITE external drive which came housed in an ASUS-branded SATA enclosure, USB 3.0 and externally powered (pic below in case that's helpful). Any reason I couldn't just pop that enclosure open and swap in the WH16NS60? Or would the ASUS enclosure create problems flashing the WH16NS60 with modified firmware, and/or cause other problems?
