video codec not supported

Post by ca8050 »

mkv files made with this program will not play on my Samsung HDTV, only gives me the message "not supported video codec". does anyone know if it's possible to change the default video decoder and/or audio codec within makemkv directly before ripping...???

my TV manual shows me all of the file extensions, containers, video decoders, audio codec and resolutions that it supports and for mkv files, it supports Divx 3.11 - 6.0, Xvid, h.264 bp/mp/hp, mpeg4 sp/asp, motion jpeg... I think makemkv converts with mpeg2 which is not supported...???

suggestions please...

MakeMKV does not alter videostreams in any way, nor does it change video codecs...

i already know that makemkv rips with mpeg2 and that it's not supported, at least thru the menu choices that i can find. i was wondering if makemkv had any solution for this or if someone could recommend a program that i can run either as a ripper or on my makemkv output file that will convert the mpeg2 video codec to one of my choice that is supported ...???

Use one of the many free GUI's for x264 here to convert makemkv output to H.264 which your tv will support:
(most of these are windows only) http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=78

handbrake and ripbot264 is good for beginners
handbrake - http://handbrake.fr/
ripbot - http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=127611

handbrake is very easy to use, free, opensource and cross platform but the official build has a very out of date x264 version. You can use development builds if you want something more recent.
Or if you are feeling adventurous you can encode directly using avisynth and x264, or x264 directly if you dont need any filtering.
