Compress a MKV copy?

How can I make the MKV copy smaller (compressed) than the original size? I have downloaded many movies in quality 1080 whit about 1,2 gb size. I have many DVD:s I now like to convert to MKV and store on a hard drive

Visit handbrake.fr and give it a try.

EVERYTHING I store has gone through handbrake on its way to the server. The only exception is 3D; handbrake cannot handle 3D, and I have no hardware that can display it, so it doesn't go onto the server as 3D.
