Drive Information

Thank you. It worked :)

I've got a question, though. Does this firmware downgrade enable, by any chance, the ability to write BDXL media?

Yes, it does. However the DBK uses a plastic lens for the laser instead of a glass lens compared with the 212 drives that are BDXL enabled from the factory. So it is a little less precise regarding writing. But if you want to burn BDXL you should regardless use this method with spare areas anyway.

i tried spinning up a 4k uhd disc in it, but it says no disc. then i tried a regular audio cd, and it played that audio cd.
then i opened the drive up to clean the len's but it still cant pick up the 4k uhd disc, only audio cd's it can play.

You nee to try regular BDs, not audio discs. If that doesn't work the drive is defective. I also assume it's a return.

Thanks Coopervid, i have flashed it with success. firmware version went up to 1.02 (It was version 1.01 before), and the drive became a BDR-S12U (It was a BDR-S12JX before).
after flashing it, it struggled to read a 4k uhd disc, (lots of clicking noise internally) but it eventually played it and Makemkv was able to read it too.
but just to satisfy myself, i tried it a 2nd time, and this time it totally failed. no disc detected. even regular bluray disc couldnt show up, only regular audio cds were fine.
guess i got a "Borked Set"
but thanks anyway for the help buddy.
attached below are the "Before and After" flashing readouts.

Got another BDR-212DBK. MakeMKV shows the exact same info now as it showed with the previous unit, same firmware etc, so I just flashed the same files I already had, since they had been successfully flashed on the first unit. And this time, according to the flashing program, everything went OK too. But the unit won't read any BD disc, neither regular not UHD discs. It reads DVD, though.

I've flashed it again just in case, but to no avail. Maybe this is a faulty unit. I should have checked if it read BD discs before flashing, like I did with the previous unit... I'll probably need to return it. Is there any way I can flash the original firmware back?

Product: BD-RW BDR-212D
Revision: 1.02
Firmware date: 2022-03-16

Thanks in advance.
