UHD drives

Just wanted to say that I bought a ready-to-go drive with enclosure from johngotti (Alex) and it was just that - ready to go. Plugged it into a USB 3.0 port on my computer and started ripping. I also bought some discs from him at a really good price.

He answered a bunch of my questions and helped me pick out what I needed. Great guy.

So if you want to get started and skip the headaches, I would suggest that Alex is your man.

Unless you see it has fw 3.xx and not 1.xx

So how can I tell the seller to check what firmware it is running?

have him open up make mkv is the easiest way or i think you can check through device manager and under the drives details it might say not sure exact steps not on a pc with one of those drives right now

I'm pretty sure it is too old. As far as I am aware, the start date for "UHD friendly" was Oct 2015.

Then I am left with the option to buy either asus bw-16d1ht for 100$ at my local shop or the lg wh16ns60 for around 180$ pre flashed from one of the sellers here on the forum

One last question then. If I decide to buy the Asus what is the best way to flash it? Is this a drive I should cross flash to avoid "sleep bug" or is it just a plain downgrade of firmware?

i think the NS60 firmware is better but not on asus drives for the potential to not be able to burn disks if that is not a problem for you go with NS60 FW if you burn disks go asus 3.10mk

If you want to use anything else (besides MakeMKV! Anydvd, or perhaps something else?) the ASUS would be the one to go for. For MakeMKV exclusively, the NS60 is the best!

So the drive is to old to support UHD, but can it still be used to rip 1080p blurays?

If yes, what firmware do I need flash to it for best performance, and what is the correct way of doing so? I am only asking since in makemkv it says

Unrestricted read speed Possible (with patched firmware)

I believe your drive is already on the latest firmware for that earlier model. No need to do anything. Just rip your blu-ray discs as normal. There's no patched firmware yet for that drive to enable libredrive access.

LG WH16NS60, which is an official UHD drive (thus a bit more expensive!)

Alex, you do know that either flasher can flash both LG and ASUS drives (plus other branded clones), don't you?

I do yes, but I still like to "brand match" whenever possible.
Sure wish we had a flasher for the BP50NB40....

Just out of curiosity, if I was somehow able to find a way to flash the BP50NB40 and the BP60NB10, what firmware/s would we use to make them UHD friendly?

I know Mike has created some MK firmware for them both but if these don't turn out to be UHD friendly, what other firmware could we use?
