@RESET_9999 or indeed any other knowledgeable person regarding Dolby Vision.

Is there likely to be any difference in video quality between a retail 4K UHD Blu-ray release that includes Dolby Vision and a Hybrid release combining the non-Dolby Vision 4K UHD Blu-ray plus RPU from a Dolby Vision WEB-DL of the same title?

Thanks.

ignoring any bitrate differences, in terms of just 'dolby vision dynamic effects' - if the original uhd is only mel and not fel, then there shouldn't be any real difference between a 'p8 custom' and 'uhd mel'

I've noticed there is likely to be a difference.

If you're converting UHD BD P7 MEL -> P8.1 then there shouldn't be any difference. The EL of an MEL is just an unused video stream used to carry the RPU, so BL+MEL+RPU (P7 MEL) is basically equivalent to BL+RPU (P8.1).

But DolbyVisionFTW is asking about applying a P5 RPU to a UHD BD HDR10 BL.

The RPU contains metadata about changes in brightness from scene to scene.

A P5 RPU is ordinarily applied to a BL encoded with IPT, which encodes luminance and chrominance differently than HDR10.

So I'm hoping someone can explain in more detail how it should/shouldn't matter, but in my experience, applying a P5 RPU to an HDR10 BL does not yield the same results as a P7 RPU generated for an HDR10 BL in the DV mastering process.

I guess a true test, which I have not done, would be to compare the P5 RPU from a WEB-DL to the P7 RPU for a UHD BD release that did include DV.

I have been scanning through this thread and find it fascinating and rather insightful. I've pulled down a few "HDR format : Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.07.06, BL+EL+RPU" hybrid releases only to find they don't play in my setup. I was hoping someone familiar with this thread could sort of summarize the state of things where 'Dolby Vision' is concerned.

The WEB-DL DV releases play perfectly in my environment, but just not these newer releases, especially the hybrids.

I have three different DV TVs:
- Hisense 75A6G, Hisense 55A6G, TCL 65R646

All three have an NVIDIA Shield Pro 2019 connected to them, all through Atmos/Vision capable 4K AVRs. I use Plex primarily but I have Kodi with DV (https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=360018) installed on all three and use it occasionally.

Whenever I try and play any of these hybrids I always get HDR10 and never DV. I have seen in this thread users who have had success connecting directly to their TVs with USB.

Would someone undergo the labor of giving me the current "state of the union" where my setup is concerned?

Not ideal but you could just convert the bluray to P8, demux 7.1 audio with tsmuxer, and then build your P8 mp4 with 7.1 audio.
Wondering if that would work. I have never tried to remux 7.1 EAC3 from a blu-ray to mkv or mp4. Would the different build-up be accepted by either container?

For those who like to know, 7.1 EAC3 tracks don't always share the same construct. On (UHD)BD it's a bit of an oddball. It carries a mandatory, independent 5.1 AC3 core to be backwards compatible. And the core is a real core: the extra EAC3 data depends on it.
Oddly enough, what I've learnt is that the EAC3 part only contains four surround channels. If an EAC3 compatible decoder processes a 7.1 EAC3 stream from (UHD)BD, the two AC3 core surrounds are replaced by the two side - and two rear channels that are present in the additional EAC3 data.

Channels in EAC3 tracks offered by streaming services like Netflix are all real EAC3 encoded, and without a legacy core.

I absolutely agree. In my early days of cross-injecting RPU, I've experienced significant differences between some HDR10 baselayers with P5 RPU and their native P7 RPU. I wonder if it's because of the different colorspace, or that P5 DV videos are a totally different DV grade because of whatever streaming-service reasons.

Anyone using the metadata from profile 5 files to "hybrid" should be comparing the PQ image to the regular profile 7 HDR10 version.
And in the case of FEL, the HDR10 image should be processed.

If they differ significantly, then the grade is different.

If not, then only the metadata can be different.
But that shouldn't be happening, since Dolby Vision is streamlined with a single source of metadata after grading.

Comparing HDR10 to Dolby Vision is pointless, and so is comparing profile 5 with unprocessed profile 7 FEL.

However it's possible that profile 5 streaming videos are enhanced in comparison to profile 7 MEL, since those are mapped down to a specific brightness.
That still would be caught by comparing the PQ grade.

"dvhe.07.06" means that it's Dolby Vision Profile 7, which is the format used on discs. So those are probably just rips of discs that have Dolby Vision and not what we call hybrids here. What we call hybrids are rips where the HDR10 video is taken from a disc, and then the DV is added from another source (usually a Web-DL), and those are usually (maybe always?) distributed as Dolby Vision Profile 8 files.

Looking at @RESET_9999's awesome DV playback device summary spreadsheet, I see that the Shield Pro does partially support Profile 7 rips, but they have to be "single-track dual-layer", and yours are presumably "dual-track dual-layer". So you can convert them, but I'm not sure what the right tool for that is. The downsides of the Shield Pro are that it doesn't support FEL (the "Full Enhancement Layer" extra video data which is found on some DV discs and is of debatable importance), and it has some long-standing color inaccuracy issues when playing Dolby Vision.

Of course. In my post I was talking about comparing "Dolby Vision enabled playback" views.
When comparing P5 vs P7 RPU appliance, obviously using the baselayer of a native MEL title would yield the most transparent views.

I just tried and it works in all the containers ( mp4 / mkv / ts) ... mkvtoolnix even keep the core intact (unlike the TrueHD tracks)
I didnt try to play the file but i expect it to work.
Nice going, RESET_9999.
MKVToolnix indeed seems to keep "real core" audiostreams intact. Just like it does with DTS-HD. Good to know it works.
Cheers

Has anybody tried the new https://www.mi.com/global/product/xiaomi-tv-stick-4k/

it seems to officially support HD Audio (DTS HD) as well as Dolby Vision. When I receive mine i’ll test if FEL playbacks correctly while also having HD Audio Passthrough.
Have you tested the Xiaomi 4k stick with DV yet, any good results?

Theres tutorial video in my scripts link. check out the bluray to profile 8.1 one.

MODE.P7 ----> MODE.1 ----> Workflow.1
then use tsmuxer nightly to mux the output file with audio. you can edit the bat file with notepad so tsmuxer popup at the end of the process
just make sure there is no pgs sub or lossless audio pre-selected at playback. You can use external SRT subs

You can also use the mp4_muxer mode but it will take much longer time to process and some files may stutter on your C1
MODE.M4 ----> MODE.1 ----> Workflow.3
