Looks like my Verbatim 43888 with a Pioneer UD04 is also failing on me...
it refuses to read or load 4K UHD Discs too...i have cleaned the Lens with a QTip dipped with alcohol and dried the lens and clean it once again with a clean dry QTip, but to no avail...
any chance of getting the firmware to try and recover it with a Reflash?

Nah.... Most likely a power problem since the Verbatim enclosure is very power hungry. Connect to USB-C or use a powered USB hub.

Phew!! Solved the issue!!
i gave it a hard knock on the casing and turned the casing "Upside Down" and loaded the 4K disc and it started to work!!
Oh My!!
the things i do to torture these beautiful drives!!

Knocking the drive hard is not the ususal way, I think
Coopervid pointed at the power supply of the 43888. You can also try change the cable, if the issue rise again or try to deactivate USB power save function. That's a experience that I've made (and it's a solution that the verbatim support suggested).

my verbatim 43888 did not come with any software utilities.. there is a cd rom which has the nero burning software..

He means deactivate USB power save function in windows.
Try using a USB-C port, a self powered USB hub (30w+) or at the very least a USB 3.0+ port direct on the motherboard.
