The higher the price, the better quality components and overall build quality.
If you want to know about speed, they all read UHD discs at 4x max.

I read elsewhere that external drives have less points of failure than internal drives. I will do my own research, thanks for your advice.

No problem. Unfortunately there are currently no compatible external Pioneer drives available as they all come with un-downgradable firmware. There is the Verbatim 43888 which contains a Pioneer BDR-UD04 drive inside but that's it.
