Hi guys,
Just bought an OWC Mercury Pro and according to this it needs modification to work? Also is it compatible with a Pioneer 211M 1.54 firmware? Thanks
The OWC chassis doesn't care about the drive Mfg or firmware.
The "modification" is mechanical. When you put the longer (Pioneer) drive in the chassis, you'll see that the drive can't be inserted far enough for the chassis/drive screw holes to line up properly. You merely need to bend the OWC chassis sheetmetal mounting tabs slightly toward the front of the chassis to get the screw holes to line up.
Thanks,
Frank
Thats good to know but as I understand based on previous use of others is that the 1.54 firmware has an issue with most SATA adapters and only works effectively if connected via a Sata cable or using a Benfei adapter. So last night i took apart an old Venus DS enclosure that was usb 2.0 spec and modded it by sneaking that benfei adapter in there with a sata extension cable such that using the power delivery system of the enclosure instead there by upgrading the chassis to usb 3.0 standard. Will use the OWC with an old LG drive instead.
Thanks

You misunderstand the issue with SATA adapters. It has nothing to do with drive firmware. It's the crappy SATA adapters that do not fully implement the SATA standard. The OWC enclosure has always had very well working SATA -> USB internals.
USB 3.x vs. USB 2.x gains you nothing for ripping discs - ripping speeds are limited by drives/firmware. 4x-6x is the max you will get, and USB 2.x is faster than that.

LG WH14NS40, UHD Friendly Internal 5.25 sata | Rip speed 8x BD 66 ~45 mins BD 100 ~1 hour if flashed properly other wise 6x rips speed and slower then BU40N
Thanks a lot!

I'd say not as only models manufactured from 2016 and have the MT1959 drive platform are UHD capable. Anyway, copy and paste the MakeMKV drive info and libredrive info text sections for confirmation.

I bought a BP50NB40 NB50 based on this guide and it doesn't look like it'll work, SDFtool Flasher gives me an error that it doesn't have the correct platform (MT1959).
Are there recent recommendations for drives that are available in the US and known to work? I took a couple weeks to order this one from overseas because it was on the list, so I'm wary of picking another off the list and giving it a shot.

Hello!
Myself & others have pre-flashed drives on-hand & available for purchase in the US. My "For sale" threads are linked in my signature. If you have any questions, you can also e-mail me directly at the e-mail address in my signature.
Thanks,
Frank

I'm sure this has been asked before, but when I try to open sdf.bin on my Mac I'm getting the "unsupported format" message. Is there a way around this?

Are you double-clicking on sdf.bin? What are you trying to accomplish? That isn't an executable file.

Does MakeMKV state that it is MT1939 though? Or is there no LibreDrive information shown at all?
Note that bad USB adapter / enclosure can "hide" things about the drive.

I have an old lg blu ray drive model WH14NS40 that was manufactured in April 2015. It appears that my drive platform (MT 1939) is incapable of being flashed. Is there any way that I can use this drive with makemkv software or am I sol? I attached a screenshot of my drive information. I should note that I'm using the drive in the OWC Mercury Pro 5.25 case.
I read the STOP READ BEFORE FLASHING and saw that I may not meet some of the requirements.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. TIA.

The MT1939 drive will work fine with non-UHD disks. It's only if you want to rip UHD that you'll need a newer drive.

Doesn't show up (for me). Should have posted the text anyway.

Btw does anyone know if there's any MT1939 drive that can be flashed with MK (or DE or older stock) firmware just for LibreDrive but not UHD? Or is it more like sdftool (I mean the CLI tool, not the GUI wrapper) simply doesn't support flashing them with anything? (Or maybe there's no MK firmware that is based on MT1939 firmware?)
