Thanks Coopervid, the instructions seem pretty straightforward; however I'm wondering which firmware file is the right one: Asus BW-16D1HT 3.10MK or something else?

WH16NS60 1.02 works better than the ASUS firmware with 3-layer UHDs.

Thanks again Coopervid, unfortunately it seems that the firmware is not applied even if flashing completes successfully

For the record, flashing takes some time (less than 1 minute), it doesn't go from 0% to 100% immediately.

I have tried both rebooting my computer as well as power cycling the drive but the outcome is the same, and MakeMKV keeps reporting

You need to flash with rawflash enc instead of main.

Kinda weird that it still reports an ASUS drive!? But that might be Mac / Linux.

After flashing it and rebooting the computer, it shows up as

Code: Select all

Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH16NS6
I believe MacOS was just caching some information about make/model.

Looks like my drive got bricked with flashing: when pushing the button to open it, nothing happens besides the LED flashing. Any disk inserted will not be detected or read.
Any way to return to the original FW? I have the .tar file created by the "dump" command.

Oh man! You talked about the full size drive ASUS fimware which made me think this is a full size drive but you seem to have a slim drive. So obviously you flashed the wrong firmware. BU40N 1.03 is recommended for yours.

You need to use SDFTool and the recovery option. Install a VM like VMWare for that to run Windows.

I did mention that firmware because it was the only one branded "ASUS" and honestly I had no idea that you could flash a different vendor firmware, that's why I asked for confirmation :D
I will try with a VM and SDFTool tomorrow when I got some more time; besides the "recover drive" option do I also need to select "Include boot loader" now?

No, you shouldn't have to include bootloader.

Hello Coopervid and MartyMcNuts,
I have tried both versions 1.3.5 and 1.3.6 of SDFTool with RECOVER drive option to flash firmware "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin"", unfortunately this did not seem to work: I see the progress bar going to the end very fast but no flashing occurs and the drive is still recognised as

Code: Select all

Product: BD-RE WH16NS6
Revision: 1.02

Did you pick the current firmware WH16NS60 1.02 in the upper box and the BU40N 1.03 in the lower box when you try to flash with Recover? The gif here shows how to do it.

Yes I did. What I also noticed is that SDFTool says the firmware is unencrypted but in previous instructions with the wrong firmware I was told to flash it encrypted - could that be the case?

I don't think so. Only your original firmware was encrypted. Please ask Marty for help. He is the go-to-guy for SDFTool.
