My optical drive has recently failed so looking to get a replacement. Before purchasing can I ask a sanity check please: if I get a Verbatim 43890 will I be able to flash this drive myself?
If it's new stock it contains a LG BU40N and you can flash it according to the UHD guide. If it's old stock it might contain a Pioneer UD03 and you have to post again so I will forward a package to flash it.
Many thanks my drive has arrived and I have some spare time to flash it. The drive info is
Drive Information
OS device name: F:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: ...
Firmware date: 2124-04-23 13:47
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 82

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

No disc inserted
So all looks good to me as platform is MT1959. What is the recommended way to flash the above drive I understand I should flash to BU40N 1.03. Do I need the enc option and should I use the makemkv inbuilt flasher as I am ok with using the command line or use the GUI flasher?

I am also keen to get a second internal optical drive are there any internal drives still available that can be flashed?

Since you are on Windows, just use SDFTool and the "All you need firmware pack" to flash 1.03.

Drive supply is critical. Also LG stopped now making optical drives. Let me know your country of residence and I will check for an internal drive.

Flash process worked great. Managed to get the Verbatim flashed drive to work - first time it failed to open the disc. Had to do a system reboot first for MakeMKV to be able to read the drive in Libre format.

I am UK based so having a second internal drive would be very handy, I was shocked when my drive failed I thought that was the end. Glad to get the Verbatim working but also keen to get a replacement internal optical drive if that is possible.
