I was wondering if that was the assumption. This should be stated in the UHD flashing guide, then. (At the top of the guide, search for "cross" and see what is and is not stated.)
So it looks like an LG external (slim) drive is usable for good discs only, and an LG or ASUS desktop drive with ASUS firmware can be used for data recovery.
