Actually, after I found Stacey Spears comment redarding FEL and MEL I doubt it could be uses for comparison.
Each version was intentionally made with maximum possible quality. So... MEL and FEL BL are not equal - MEL has higher bitrate.
To catch a difference you need to pixel-peeping for compression artifacts.
Peacock feather scene around 3:00 should be suitable for such endeavor.

Yeah that's what I figured, but a comparison of just the FEL tracks on the Shield vs a bluray player should still be valid for our purpose. Actually a comparison of just the MEL and FEL tracks on the Shield should also be of some good use. If they have similar picture like they are supposed to, then it's a good sign for the Shield's FEL capabilities. But if the FEL track looks vastly different, then the EL is probably not being properly applied.

I'm not sure if it's possible to really confirm if the Shield actually makes use of the FEL with a picture comparison.
I don't really see a difference in real life. Also the time it takes, when I switch from 1 input to another, is too long to notice any difference. 2 identical tv side by side would probably be better to spot a difference if there is any.
I will try to compare more movies later today or this week.

This is what I was thinking, too. It might prove useful. Once I get off work I'll see what I can do tonight.

If there is no discernible difference in real-life with a picture comparison, then I'm content . The rest is just curiosity. Thank you both for taking the time to do the tests!

I'm trying to make the MKV's from the SM benchmark UHD and I'm not seeing the MEL tracks listed. Does MakeMKV not recognize them as MEL? I see 2 FEL tracks. If I'm not able to stick the MEL tracks into an MKV I may have to do spot comparisons between the FEL track on my UB820 and the Shield, pausing and switching between them. Which I can do.

Pretty sure it should. Just tested with my old copy of the Last Jedi and MakeMKV correctly labels it as MEL. According to @lexyz's previous post, 20001.m2ts should be the MEL track. Maybe double check with BDInfo to make sure?

I would have thought the same thing since 20000 is the FEL track. But 20001 is not showing any DV info at all. I'm scanning the disc with the monkey right now which will spit out a bdinfo report for me.

That in theory should be the MEL track. Yet MakeMKV doesn't register it as such. Whatever. I ripped them both anyway. I'll see what happens.

None of it matters anyway. It won't play. I either get playback failed or it plays 2 seconds and hangs. That's with the FEL track. The MEL track as suspected doesn't trigger DV at all and plays in HDR. So much for that fun theory.

Ah that's a bummer. Maybe these tracks are just a bit atypical compared to regular movies.

Are you suggesting that 10000 nit Dolby Vision files are somehow non-standard?? Yea, i know. it was worth a try though.

WOA! Ok then. I just fast forwarded a little bit in the video and it plays. Alright then. Maybe we can test this out.

I think something else is wrong with either the single layer el+rpu file or the shield because on the Doctor sleep scene, yes the vertex does reduce the red push but there is still a red tint on the little girl face while on the x700 with a dual-layer profile 7 file, it's totally clean. I would presume it's because of the file because i dont see this problem on streaming apps.

It's not the file.. Just tested it on the x700 and it's identical to the dual layer file. No red artifacts in the face.. Did this issue happen with other movies as well? i dont think its the same issue as the red push, looks more like artifacts.

Oh I had no idea the x700 supported single track dual layer files. Maybe this is why the nvidia devs stated that getting rid of the BT2020 signal didn't entirely solve the issue and that they're still actively working on it.
