MakeMKV will return the Firmware version ("Revision") once the drive has been installed. The Asus drives do NOT have the Firmware listed on the label like the LGs for the most part.

I'm getting some funky results with these LG drives I bought at Fry's. I'm thinking it's less about the drives and more about my config. I've got an 2017 HP Envy 750-624 with Windows 10 Pro and a 2010 Dell Studio XPS 7100 running Windows 7 Home Premium. Wondering which thread discusses basic and advanced makemkv configs people are using. I think I need to double check a bunch of stuff, like background resources that could be getting in the way of the program doing it's thing, pointing to the wrong jar file, sleep and power settings, hell I dunno, is it because I'm using the same reg key on two PCs? (never at the same time granted). I'm starting to get mad errors but they're the same across these 4 drives so me thinks either a pallet load of shit drives or user error....

I'm happy with my uhd friendly LG drive its been a really good drive,however im aware that it will eventually go bad as time goes on.Ive reviewed the list of friendly uhd drives on the first page, the prospect of possibly having to flash a drive with friendly firmware seems daunting to me,so im not really sure what a good backup drive would be? I have an acer Tc 605 aspire running latest version of windows 10 home.If it helps i like external drives they seem easier to work with.

It is a thread about Mac, but for external drives the same applies for Windows.

We all have slim pickings. The friendly/supported list is small, so pick and pray.

i'm on my 3rd drive trying to make this work with my MAC (to be fair i bought the other 2 without finding this thread)..

Today the LG WH16ns40 arrived & I am using the Vantec NST-536S3-BK NexStar DX USB 3.0 External Enclosure for SATA Blu-Ray/CD/DVD Drive and I'm having the same exact problem. It shipped with firmware version 1.03

I put the UHD disc (tried 5 different disk today), the drive spins.. and spits it back out.... I can successfully read a BlueRay no problem.

I never even get to the step with MakeMKV to click on the disc

This is so frustrating. I have a home built Server in my house that runs Server 2008R2 that I could pop the drive in & see if it's a MAC problem or what.. not even sure if MKV runs on Server 2008.

I feel like there has to be something small i am doing wrong.. i have successfully backed up 30+ bluerays so far but really want to get my UHD's on my NAS as i don't have a UHD player in every room of the house

@steelerfan .. unfortunately it has been reported in couple of threads that firmware 1.03 on the LG drive do not work as LG fixed the ACCS loophole. You will need to crossflash it with ASUS clean 3.02 firmware following Teddy's guide https://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopi ... 16&t=17058

WooHoo .. won the drive lottery thanks to Alex ... got a LG-WH16NS40 with SVC code: NS50. Definitely 4K UHD friendly .. don't know for sure the firmware inside until I plug it in my enclosure and run MakeMKV.

Fine job sir! Please keep us, or me, posted about how that thing works. I'm heading over there now to buy a 4th LG and at least one ASUS before they stop allowing me to use the same promo code over and over again.

I'd sure love to compare notes with someone about Windows PC configurations. To be more specific, how much crap can I uninstall / turn off, to free up resources, so makemkv can do it's work with these drives, using Windows 10 Pro and/or Windows 7 Home Premium. Snippet of the log to the end. I don't get it. I did Deepwater Horizon, Goodfellas, Push, and part of Labyrinth before this went to hell. Tried Revanant next same shit. Reinstalled Windows 10 Pro, removed all bloatware, uninstalled every application that was not needed. I've got Java, VLC and MakeMKV on this machine and that's pretty much it. Hashed key file in the correct directory. I assume I've specified the correct Java Executable and DTS Decoder in the preferences. Profile I'm using is FLAC. Everything else is default since I'm not sure what most of them mean. Is it because I'm sending the output to another internal SATA drive as opposed to the drive that makemkv is running on?

Bought the last two ASUS BW-16D1HTs at my local Fry's, one comes with a $25 rebate, score. Bought 4 more of the LG WH16NS40s bringing my total now to 7, all using the same promo code because those idiots are unable to read apparently.

Of the two ASUS one has 3.0.0 and the other 3.0.1 and seem to be working much better than the LG so I'm not sure what the fuck is up. It seems these drives, the ASUS and LG, either work from the get go, or start making sounds like they're straining to read the disc over and over and over again then fill the log with all sorts of errors and eventually the hash check error.

If other users have luck with these Fry's LG drives I found then cool it's my bad, if not I'm returning every single fucking one. It's bad enough these assholes are stealing the digital codes out of UHD Blu Ray packages, but to be selling a ton of bad drives yeah that's not going to fly. I guess that's what happens when you're paid $4 an hour to work in a building on top of a SuperFund site....

Finally have one stable setup with the quad core i7 machine and the ASUS BW-16D1HT with 3.00 firmware on it. Fuck me I've been dicking with these setups for two weeks now.

Hey what do you guys do about discs that have multiple titles of the same size? I don't get it why the first couple Harry Potters had two identical titles, at least I didn't see any difference. I ripped them both because I'm not doing this again, and hard drives are inexpensive, but heck that's a massive directory.
