You need a Shield to get DV playback from an MKV.
My TV (Panasonic GZ950) can play DV from MP4 files and HDR10 from MKV but not DV it seems. I tried ffmpeg to copy the tracks out to MP4 but it seems to remove the HDR info.
Is there a way to convert the MKV to MP4 to preserve the DV info? I'm fine with AC3 by the way.
My first post on here, hello everyone

OK, been following the DV topics for a while and finally took the plunge. Using 1.15.4 I re-ripped all my DV discs.
Playback chain is Shield Pro to LG C9 on Plex. When I play the MKVs, the C9 indicates HDR but doesn't indicate Dolby Vision is triggered.
What am I doing wrong?

make sure the Plex app on your Shield is updated. that's the most common issues

I’m on:
PMS 1.21.0.3711
Plex client app 8.11.0.22186
Should be adequate, no?

Yeah that looks good. Have you double checked with mediainfo that the files do include DV? Also what is your display mode set on for the Shield and do DV from streaming apps work?

It's annoying but Plex can't detect if your TV is capable of DV playback, so you have to set your Shield to one of the DV supported modes. Other media apps, like MRMC can detect DV support and change the setting for you. Still waiting on MRMC to support profile 7 playback though.

Thanks guys. Using mediainfo I can verify that the HDR format is Dolby Vision dvhe 07.06.
Shield is set to: DV enabled, Resolution is 4K 59.940 Hz, DV and HDR10 ready.

Bit of a mystery then. If you're not already, can you try selecting one of the AC3 audio tracks instead of the lossless tracks since it looks like you're plugging it straight into the TV? Maybe selecting a non compatible audio track is throwing off the whole playback chain. Also, does DV work in netflix or disney+?

Hmm, interesting. DV does indeed work on Disney+ via the Shield.
I usually only rip the main audio track to MKV but I’ll experiment with ripping others.

Hey I posted this in the DV mkv spec support but I think I’ll try it here as well if that’s okay with you guys: So if I have a DV .mkv file from makemkv, what exactly would I need to do to effectively remux it into and .m2ts file without losing any quality or hdr layers?

So it does look like this is an audio playback chain issue. If Plex is passing AC3 directly it appears to successfully trigger DV. If transcoding to AC3, it reverts to HDR. Is this a known issue?

HD audio being transcoded to something lesser, DD+ for example, in conjunction with only getting HDR is a sign that the Nvidia DV decoder has crashed. This is a known issue that was supposedly fixed but isn't. Plex are still working with Nvidia.

It honestly doesn't matter if the Nvidia DV decoder crashes during transcoding. If you have to do transcoding with any part of a 4k video, you're going to have a bad time. Just mux in the ac3 core when you're ripping and leave it alone. You're not missing out on anything if you're just using your TV speakers.

If any part of the playback stream (audio, video, or even pgs subtitles) has to be transcoded, then all parts of the stream will be transcoded. Since your 4k video ends up having to be transcoded because of the audio stream, you're going to have a bad time regardless. Just mux in the ac3 core when you're ripping and leave it alone. You have missed the point.
It is the Nvidia DV decoder crashing that causes Plex to start transcoding the audio.

I don't think so; he's trying to play lossless audio through his TV speakers. When Plex senses this, it's going to transcode down to a supported format (ac3). It's pretty obvious that the instant he manually chooses ac3, the issue goes away.
