alexbar wrote: Mon May 25, 2026 5:09 pm Thank you for your reply. You told me the truth, my drive is already ready for UHD Blu-ray. I managed to play the disc directly in VLC, AFTER having to update the makemkv registry. I added some extra files to the VLC Player folder, and I don't know if that's why it plays. However, it's not playing in MPC-be. Do I have to put those same files in the MPC folder? Is MPC-be really the best player for this? Remember that I want to play the disc directly in a player on a Windows 11 PC.
I have never had any luck getting mpc-be to play uhd discs directly. MPC-HC yes, not MPC-BE.
How did you do it?
Download and install the K-Lite Mega codec pack which includes MPC-HC.

I'm seeing the BDR-212V and BDR-212DBK available to purchase new on New Egg. My understanding is these are identical drives, hardware wise.

I'm also seeing the BDR-209 available for purchase from users on this site.

I can't seem to find much information comparing them other than this: https://usa.pioneer/search?type=product ... disc+drive

Is one better than the other for UHD ripping?

These drives haven't been available new from anywhere for some time. Caveat emptor!

So you are saying Newegg is incorrect? https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/ ... 2b9f3x7736

Let's just say hypothetically, lol, that I can get one.

Which is better? Is there a difference at all?

Yeah they are charging more than I did for those when I was flashing testing and shipping them they did nothing and sell them for that much except have a massive stock of them

And lest say they know who I was and would send me all their returns and alot of them were dead so I stoped ordering from them

I've ordered a few of the BDR-212DBK drives through Newegg from Runtechmedia and they've all worked well. They come in a generic brown box containing the drive and a Pioneer instruction sheet. The last one I received was open...the tape sealing the box had been cut...though the wrapping around the drive was intact. It tested out fine, so I kept it, but it may have been a return.

The prices have gone up since I purchased most of mine...URL is https://www.newegg.com/pioneer-model-bd ... NS1CC06542.

I recall reading in the forums here that the BDR-212 is the only Pioneer drive that uses a plastic lens for the laser but that this doesn't impact its reading capabilities, though it could make it less reliable for writing.

Hi,

Today for the first time I started experimenting ripping 4k UHD disc. As most of my collection has always been regular 1080 blurays I finally got around to it. Anyhow first drive I tested out was the Pioneer BDR-S13U (according to firmware) that billy sold me working well at 3.8x speeds, then I tried it on my BDR-211M->S11UBK drive and UHD rip working pretty good at 4.0x speeds. Then out of curiosity decided to see what would happen with the BDR-211M on 1.54 firmware. I was confused regarding UHD support on the last released firmware locking that ability out or the fact that the latest Makemkv utility has been patched to allow UHD access. Anyhow I can confirm that the 1.54 firmware is compatible for UHD reading on the latest 1.54 firmware and makemkv release. Working well at also 4.0x speeds.

Also wanted to say thank you to the developer for all his hard work to make this happen.

Thank you.

I have a Pioneer BDR-209MBK reporting:

Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-209M
Revision: 1.53
Firmware date: 2019-03-07
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 81

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: Pioneer RS8F00
Firmware version: ID04

I checked the SDF.bin list posted above, and the only entry I could find for platform 8F00 / BDR-209M is:
PIONEER-BD-RW___BDR-209M-8.53-31235FEA-8F00ID52-20190307
That's revision 8.53/ID52 — mine is 1.53/ID04, which doesn't appear to be in the list at all. I'm not sure if that's actually why my drive shows "Possible, not yet enabled" rather than "Enabled," or if something else is going on — just flagging what I noticed in case it's relevant.
Is my exact firmware missing from the database (happy to send a dump if that helps), or would flashing to the known-working 8.53/ID52 be the right move? I'm new to flashing/UHD drive setup, so please bear with me if I'm missing something. Running MakeMKV v1.18.3 on macOS (Apple Silicon).
Thanks for any guidance!
