So I'm thinking about buying a UHD blu ray burner from ebay (shipping from china)
Firmware is pre 12/2022, and its a UHD model. Here's the info. Its a Pioneer BDR-S11JX drive.
The seller in China actually sent you the MakeMKV information about the drive?

I can imagine that some sellers are aware of their wrong playing competitors and this could be a way to to differentiate theirself.
And with the ebay buyer protection could it be a good and safe deal.

So I'm thinking about buying a UHD blu ray burner from ebay (shipping from china), but I want to be sure that it'll rip UHD disks. This whole thing is a little confusing and I just want to double check before I make the purchase. From what I can tell, this one should do the trick. Firmware is pre 12/2022, and its a UHD model. Here's the info. Its a Pioneer BDR-S11JX drive.
Drive Information
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-S11
Revision: 1.53
Serial number:
Firmware date: 2020-08-03
Bus encryption flags: 1B
LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8800
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-211
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.53/ID43
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Be cautious of buying a drive from China, especially on eBay. Seller could have found that MakeMKV drive info text from many places online & just re-used or copied/pasted it.
Since Pioneer stopped making drives 1st of 2025, there are a lot of fake/re-labeled drives coming from China & available on eBay. Make sure you have "free" returns (they don't try to make you pay to return it to China) or have some type of buyer protection.
Thanks,
Frank

They sent an actual image of the drive information from their computer. But I mean that could obviously be fake as well. Thanks for the tip.

that drive can be flashed to do UHD email me that drive info section
Ok great. Was hoping to avoid flashing since its marked as a UHD drive, but Id just be happy to get a drive that works. I'm still deciding whether or not I'm going to buy it as its a bit expensive, but I will definitely reach out to you if I end up purchasing it. Thank you so much!

My BDR-212U has stopped working.
I know the firmware is too recent to allow UHDs, but it was working fine for bluray/dvd until 1.18.2. Now I can't get it to work at all. I've tried manually installing sdf.bin. I've tried completely removing my .MakeMKV directory and starting over. Nothing works. Drive reports its information (below), so I know it's still alive in some sense. But inserting a blu ray causes a the light to blink a few times and then the drive icon just spins forever.
Fedora Linux 36
MakeMKV 1.18.2 (also tried 1.18.1, known good release with blu ray that worked before).
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-212U
Revision: 1.04
Serial number:
Firmware date: 2022-12-20
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Drive platform: Pioneer RS8F01
Firmware version: ID83
I can't get it to dump the firmware, or I'd send it in. Just guessing, but is this drive model close enough to one that works to cause the wrong firmware to be loaded? I guess I could be unlucky enough that I've had a hardware failure that coincides with upgrading makemkv, but I'm doubtful.
I have an older drive that continues to work fine:
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-212U
Revision: 1.01
Serial number:
Firmware date: 2020-07-21
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8F01
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-212T
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.01/ID58
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes
Any guesses?
I can confirm I have the exact same issue with a BDR-212U unit, all the symptoms are the exact same. On latest MakeMKV.
Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr1
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-212U
Revision: 1.04
Serial number:
Firmware date: 2022-12-20
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 81
LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: Pioneer RS8F01
Firmware version: ID83
No disc inserted

Btw, is this one of those BDR-212UHBK from/for the Japan market instead of BDR-212UBK?
EDIT: Ahh looks like my guess is correct:

P.S. Btw the firmware (updater that includes the kernel) can be downloaded at
https://www.st-trade.co.jp/support/download/. No idea if that's what it takes for mike to add the support though.
