FWIW there is considerably more hope today than there was 2 years ago... ;)
OK, that's at least some good news. Looks like this journey is a long one.

It seems that the BDR-209M is still being sold in Japan under the I-O DATA brand (https://www.iodata.jp/product/storage/e ... /index.htm). They are readily in stock.

Out of curiosity I bought one of these. The manufacturing date is October 2024 and it was made in China. The drive itself has no I-O DATA branding - it looks exactly like any another BDR-209 I can find pictures of and the labels all say Pioneer. Here's the drive information:

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: E:
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-209MIO
Revision: 1.54
Serial number: redacted
Firmware date: 2020-07-21
Bus encryption flags: 1B

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: Pioneer RS8F00
Firmware version: ID13

No disc inserted
From what I understand this drive should actually be possible to flash, though I don't have access to a flasher. If anyone can help with that let me know.

Maybe I'm missing something but wouldn't this be a relatively big deal since you can buy them new? The only issue is that they are fairly expensive for being such old drives.

I need some help, I have tried UHD discs but they aren’t accepted, but it just returns no disc.
I saw that someone else hade already ask for help with ( firmware E116/ID71).
I tried the SDF tool but it returned that I have the wrong plattform.
Hoping that someone can help me to get this to work

slagathor wrote: Thu Sep 18, 2025 10:56 pm @billycar11 I did switch to Linux from Windows. Does the Linux version of MakeMKV not have access to HK downloads? I'd prefer not to have to use Windows if possible.

If it matters, I am using Arch Linux and installed according to these MakeMKV instructions. I've also tried using the AUR version of MakeMKV but get the same error regardless. I can play / rip Bluray just fine btw.

Anything I can do here to get this working?

Thanks
You have to get your hk downloads working or make sure the docker passes through the drive fully
Both show similar issues

All that can work on Linux fine it just a matter of having it setup correctly
Okay so the drive worked fine in windows but I could not for the life of me get it working on Linux. Turns out switching the SATA port the drive was plugged into fixed it! Not sure why other port worked with Windows but just sharing this fix here in case anyone else is having the same issue.

Pioneer external slim BDR-XS07U works, and rips significantly faster than my internal BU40N or internal BW-16D1HT. It's supposed to be a 4x drive but it's faster than my 8x drive, on USB 3.

I'd share my firmware but makemkv's sdftool doesn't work on linux (wish it did). I couldn't flash my BU40N and I can't dump my XS07U, it just hangs forever after loading sdf.conf.

I figured at least sharing that it works is helpful.

Thanks Coopervid I can't reply to PMs (I think) but I'll give it a go tomorrow and let you guys know how it goes. If it works then it seems like you can still buy a 212 brand new today, with flashable firmware and a recent manufacturing date. I don't know what their long term plans are but they announced the drive this summer, after Pioneer had already closed up shop, and there's no indication that this is some sort of a limited run with whatever stock they have left.

Boy!You are completely off. Post when you are sober again. Pioneers are 4x max. LGs are faster but might fail with hard to read diss.

I am watching right now ripping a dvd with both the bu40 and the pioner and the pioner is ripping a lot faster. maybe it's a linux problem, but your condescending remarks are not welcome and you can piss off.
