EDIT: BTW I tried some discs that all my other drives gave errors on - that I thought were just damaged discs - and this drive with the 1.03 firmware was able to read them. It struggled for sure but did end up making good rips. Perhaps that's a good omen for this v1.03 firmware. If I encounter any errors/probs I'll post them here first before flashing to v1.02...
This success with those discs makes me very happy with the BH40N drive of course.

I followed the instructions as written. Makemkv now shows me having a BD-RE WH16NS60 Rev. 1.02 with LibreDrive enabled on a MT1959 drive plarform with patched firmware. The graphic shows the drive door open but the drive doesn't function. No activity. Doesn't spin, door won't open, no lights.

Not sure if this matters but I replaced the internal slim drive of a Dell Precision T7610 with the BU40N. Did I use the correct firmware?

If you flashed the WH16NS60 Rev. 1.02 firmware onto a BU40N, that means you've just flashed a desktop firmware onto a slim drive. You should never, ever do this. Power off (or outright unplug if you want to be 100% sure it doesn't get any power) your drive immediately until we recover it, the longer you leave it powered on the more likely it is to be dead for good. I am a bit busy right now but I will post the instructions as soon as possible.

Apologies for the delay. Copy DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin from Marty's firmware pack (from the Slim External Drives folder) into the /tmp folder and try this when you're ready, please :
Replacing /dev/sr0 with the correct device path as needed.

Notice the space after "JB8", it is not a typo. Leave it as it is.

Let me know what happens. Hopefully this should save your drive and make it LibreDrive-compatible and UHD-compatible to boot.

Also, if the above fails, please try this full command instead :
For this last one, notice the quotes around the entire command line argument and not just the boot ID.

Loaded a 4K disk of Zack Snyder's Justice League. It spun and spun. Replaced it with a BD version. It spun and spun. It finally did load. Is the BU40N ver1.00 the firmware I want?

Sure thing ! You might want to power off your computer (and drive) for 30 seconds before attempting to rip a disc, as is recommended after a flash.

And yes, the BU40N 1.00 firmware is the firmware you want for Linux.

EDIT : Also, Blu-ray discs spinning for a while before being loaded successfully is to be expected. 4K discs usually take longer to load as well.

Both 4k disks of Justice League spun and spun and then claimed "no disk in drive". A dvd loaded normally. The BD disks of Justice League loaded after a while. With both 4K disks the drive sounded really ragged. It may be wounded beyond all hope, unless you have a fresh idea or two.

Did you carefully clean your discs (not the label side obviously, the other one) with a clean, *slightly* damp microfiber cloth and fully dry said discs with another, clean microfiber cloth ? One should almost always do this before attempting to rip a disc, particularly if the disc is old or has been stored in its box for a while. Blu-ray discs have a (sometimes invisible) protective chemical haze that interferes with disc detection and playback on PC drives, as well as disc ripping.

If this fails... Aside from trying other 4K discs to see whether these 4K discs you have might be bad (or might be difficult enough to require a Pioneer, anyway), I am out of ideas. Maybe someone else has another idea.

They are not even BD-100 Blu-rays (and one of them seems to be "merely" a BD-50), so if those discs are in good condition and fail it might not be a good sign.

All of a sudden it read 4K Disk 2 of Snyder's Justice League. I'm ripping it now. I'll keep you informed.

Disk 2 sucessfully ripped. The file is twice the size of the Blu-Ray Disk 2, so it must be 4K. Disk 1 is probably corrupted. Oh, well.
