Just a update. Good news. I received the Asus BW-16D1X-U today and first thing I checked was the build date and serial number and It has a Pioneer BDR-212T. The serial of T4D and built date April 2025. Also I opened the front sliding door and saw the Pioneer branding they have on their drives plates. I was a little worried. Now time to get it ripping UHD after cross flash.
I have more ASUS BW‑16D1X‑U coming, and all the serial number begin with "W2..." (per the invoice sheet). I suspect they skipped letters "U" & "V" because they may appear similar, depending on the font, and went to "W" for 2026. I expect these drives to have a Mfg date of February, 2026.
Thanks,
Frank
I wonder if they are still using the 212T?

I have two brand new at home since yesterday. Good deal from German online shop. Will check today after work, I'm curious which drives are inside.

This is a observation. I noticed while looking at both ASUS BW‑16D1X‑U boxes one with LG BH50N / LG BH16NS40 the box color is white with slight purple tint - only has the windows 11 logo on the front. While the one with Pioneer 212t the box color is white - Mac OS and Windows 11 logo on front and side where the serial number is has a sticker made it Taiwan. Both have the same built year.

The first of the two I bought contains a BW-16D1HT, S/N starts with TCD an was built in December 2025.
The second I will check later of the day. I assume, it will be the same.

I just bought a new (not used) Asus BW-16D1X-U. Its serial number starts with TCD. The sticker on the bottom of the device tells me that it was manufactured in December 2025. Now I would like to find out what internal drive is installed in this external drive that was sold to me as an Asus BW-16D1X-U. But how do I do that? MakeMKV shows me the following information:
Laufwerksinformation
OS-Gerätename: /dev/sr1
Produzent: ASUS
Produkt: BW-16D1X-U
Revision: A105
Serienummer: KLZ...
Firmware-Datum: 2120-12-02 11:14
Markierungen der Bus-Verschlüsselung: 1F
Highest AACS version: 61
LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Why is the serial number shown by MakeMKV (starting with KLZ) completely different from the one that is printed on the stickers on the device and on the packaging? Does MakeMKV show the serial number of the actual internal drive? When the drive opens its disk tray, I can see the front of the internal drive. It looks very much like an Asus BW-16D1HT to me. But how can I be sure? Do I have to take the internal drive out of the enclosure to look at the sticker on the internal drive? If so, how do I go about doing that? Are there screws hidden underneath the rubber feet? Will such an operation void my warranty? And can someone already tell from the information I shared whether this drive can be flashed to be able to rip UHD Blu-ray disks?

Can this really be a drive from LG? The front looks exactly like an Asus BW-16D1HT. Does Asus sometimes slap the faceplate of an Asus BW-16D1HT onto drives from other manufacturers and sell them as Asus drives?

asus does not make the bw16d1ht
lg does
all asus does is rebrand drives

Yeah, ASUS is an OEM manufacturer like Buffalo, Techpulse, Archgon, Verbatim and others.
They use drives from manufacturer LG, Pioneer or Panasonic / Matshita.

As mentioned, ASUS do not make drives. They are OEM, mostly from LG and Pioneer. The BW-16D1HT is a rebadged LG WH16NS40.

Have you ever come across an Asus BW‑16D1H‑U Pro with a serial number starting with M4…?
I'm wondering what's inside that unit.

Looks like manufacturing date of April 2021.
If the BW-16D1H-U follows the same pattern as the BW-1601X-U then it should have a Pioneer inside.

Thanks for the information. So, would a serial number starting with K6… indicate a drive manufactured in June 2019?
Do you happen to know whether LG or Pioneer drives were being installed in 2019?
