Seems like I was looking at a G5, not a G4.

The LG BU40N might fit in a 17" iMac G4, but to connect it via USB you'd need to fit a slimline adapter, which as-is seems unlikely to physically fit. However, you might be able to replace the HDD with a SDD and make some room.
