I tried using the `_private_data.tar` you linked, but it didn't work for me. The `makemkvcon guiserver` process still spins forever at 100%.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I think even though it hasn't been tested, it should work for others who have this problem.

I had exactly the same symptoms, my internal LG disc drive locked up at the same point. Unfortunately, I don't have access to an older version of MakeMKV, but I found that if I used my old Samsung USB disc drive instead everything burst into life. If I tried to use the internal drive afterwards, the application locked up and the only way I could get the USB drive to work was to restart the the application.

can confirm, 1.17.8 does not work. using the private_data from a previous system did not work either.
what worked was downgrading back to 1.17.7.
the download links for both packages are the same as the current links pointing to the 1.17.8 versions, just replace 1.17.8 with 1.17.7.
like so:

I have this exact issue on Fedora 41 on multiple machines with 1.17.9 from both FlatHub and manual install.
It works perfectly on an old macbook air I have laying around, which is the only saving grace right now.
It's clearly not the drive or the machine, it's the MakeMKV build.

Hi all,
I have the same problem with MakeMKV 1.17.9 on Manjaro stable updated to today.
What I've found:
* MakeMKV starts correctly without a disk
* iserting a disk results in an infinite loop
* copyng the disk with dd creating an ISO image and giving the image as input to MakeMKV works correctly and generates the MKV files

I found a workaround. At least for my system.
MakeMKV does still work with a USB DVD drive. I tested it with a no-name Maxxter DVD drive.

I got this same issue, with a debug output just like rstevenson1976's after installing a new ASUS BW-16D1HT. I was using version 1.18.1, and makemkv seemed to just lock up after the bios message. Fortunately, I happened to have a copy of 1.17.7 in my pacman cache, so I installed it, and makemkv ran the drive normally.
Then I flashed the drive's bios to the 3.10 mk version (asus-bw-16d1ht-3.10-wm01601-211901041014.bin) from the stock 3.11 (still using makemkv 1.17.7). Again, the drive worked fine with makemkv 1.17.7, but it also worked fine when I reinstalled makemkv 1.18.1.
So I'm guessing that the newer versions of makemkv have problems with the newer asus bios. I think I'll hang on to a copy of 1.17.7, just in case.

Hi all,
the same problem here with version 1.18.1. Version 1.17.7 works (haven't tried 1.17.8 and 1.17.9). Distribution is Debian 13 Trixie and optical drive is HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH10LS30 from Hitachi LG.

I also had a problem with the 1.18.2 binary (Kubuntu 24 LTS) and HL-DT-ST_BD-RE BH16NS55 1.05.
I don't have previous logs, but the program was "blocked" on:
OK - "SDF auto v098: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__BH16NS55_1.05_212006181342_KLTNBHE4507" - last line in old log
NOK - "003332:0000 Saved FW dump file as .MakeMKV/dump_FW_38AD22B8E13B299FFE3E.tgz"
NOK - "003347:0000 Please send the file ".MakeMKV/dump_FW_38AD22B8E13B299FFE3E.tgz" to
support@makemkv.com"
Version MakeMKV v1.17.7 linux(x64-release) works perfectly.
