Thank you everyone who created the software and documented how to use it!
I'm running Debian Linux, and a QEMU/KVM virtual machine running Windows 10 x64. I connected a new Buffalo BRXL-PUS6U3B drive to the VM through USB redirection. I did all the following on Windows.
I used the SDFtool Flasher v1.3.5 in order to read the original firmware and back it up. I also backed up the firmware dump made by MakeMKV v1.17.8. For some reason, these two firmware dumps don't produce the same files (after extraction), and there are binary differences in the firmware dumps for files of the same name. I don't know which dump to trust, in case I need to restore it for some reason. If anyone has an explanation, please help.
I then flashed DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin on the drive using SDFtool Flasher v1.3.5. A minute later, the drive was ready and flashed!

Forget the dumps. They are useless.

Can you please elaborate why you think they are useless? My use case is to flash them back if I need to restore the device to its manufacturer state for whatever reason (e.g., investigating an issue, warranty repair, selling the device).

The dump info was only used for Mike when he developed Libredrive. No chance to flash the dump back. Only full firmwares as provided in the firmware packs. What#s your issue with that?

Oh I though the dumps contained the complete firmware, and could be reflashed into the device if needed. I don't currently have an issue with the firmware I flashed. I just wanted to have a plan B in case issues appeared later. I'm trying to be cautious, so I wanted to back up, just in case.

After flashing DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin into the burner, I lost the ability to read and burn BD-R XL discs (I tried BD-R XL 100 GB made by Verbatim). The drive would not recognize the BD-R XL disc as an empty disc, and would report it as incompatible. I was, however, able to burn BD-R and BD-RE discs with that firmware.
Flashing DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin solved the issue, and allowed me to read and burn BD-R XL discs. The burner still reports that LibreDrive is enabled in MakeMKV.
I'm unaware of the drawbacks of downgrading from version 1.03 to version 1.00 of the firmware. I would appreciate it if someone gives us an idea about this.

1.00 is fine better in some compatibility ways.
only reason 1.03mk is recommended is so its 1 step for everyone on any firmware
the multi step ones like the bp50 cause alot of confusion for people

Just wanted to add another vote of confidence for the
Buffalo BRXL-PUS6U3B working with UHD after successful flash.
Flashing with
Marty's Flasher and using
HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin was quick and easy.
I was worried I had made the wrong purchase when I didn't see this drive listed in the
Ultimate UHD Drive Flashing Guide. But finding this thread eased my worries

.

Here's what I see at the moment. If there's more detailed info that can help, happy to grab that as well.

Just wanted to bump this post to help those in the future, I have the Buffalo BRXL-PUS6U3B with the same firmware version as the first quote and flashed the same firmware from the second post in Linux with MakeMKV 1.17.7 and libredrive was enabled fine and no more endless scanning bug on versions > 1.17.7.
The firmware can be found in the all you need firmware pack link on the flashing guide thread.
