Am about to head down this route myself having recently upgraded kit to 4k and starting to pick up some UHDs. Currently use Plex for all my stored media with the server running on a PC in my loft.
Since getting my new TV, LG oled CX55, I've mostly been using the built in version of the plex app which works pretty well. Also have a Chromecast Ultra and Fire Stick around as well. Once I start ripping my UHDs will continuing to use the LG app be the best option re Dolby Vision etc?

for me the problem with the internal player is the missing support for the DTS audio format using eARC from LG - that´s why i decided to research external media players
