I see.

If I get the ASUS BW-16D1HT, I would still have to do firmware downgrade in order for it to read / rip 4K?

All of these drives will need to be flashed to unlock UHD Reading/Ripping

I have a dilemma, I live in Region 2, and I want to get a region 1 Blu-Ray disc. Can I use this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07 ... UTF8&psc=1 to rip or does it not let you rip different regions.

I have not had any issues with ripping "out of region" BDs. MakeMKV doesn't care.

So does my drive recognise the BD regardless of region. I would like to know if my drive is restricted and won't even recognise the bd.

If you're using a compliant BD player, it will follow the instructions in the menus to display an "out of region" message.

If you rip EVERYTHING with MakeMKV, you'll find several of the "out of region" messages mixed in with the contents of the BD.

DVD region codes are actually more invasive than BD region codes. Yet MakeMKV ignores those, too, unless the drive itself absolutely refuses to work. That's where LibreDrive comes in handy, because it changes the drive firmware to not interfere.

So from what you are saying my Verbatim drive will recognise the BD and I can then rip everything and it won't refuse to work. If so thanks.

Should work. I don't know who manufacturers Verbatim drives, but this has worked with MakeMKV and Bluray before everyone went bonkers for UHD.

pmhCH wrote: Tue Dec 03, 2019 8:49 am I already sent in a dump of the firmware. So if you need a drive working now with UHDs, better go with the Asus.
Update: with the new 1.46 release MakeMKV starts to read an UHD but then says that a libre-compatible drive is needed...
Do you get a "keep fingers crossed" status on the right pane? If yes, you might get a working drive in a foreseeable future...
Indeed there's a "keep fingers crossed" - I do it all the time, so far no luck ;)
My fingers start to hurt ;)

Do you have an update?

Nothing from Pioneer is UHD friendly at this time.

They ARE very good drives for other purposes, though.
