ok so i can open it by typing makemkv and I used the Gui menu editor to create an addition to the sound and video tab.
Thanks for all your help.
I am currently ripping a copy of Mr. Beans Holiday. Hopefully it will all work well.

Sorry to see you guys are having problems. I managed to install in Xubuntu 9.10 (Ubuntu with XFCE desktop) first time with no errors using the superuser account. Got an error about file access when trying to compile as my regular account though. Rips dvds great, havent tried blu-ray though. The mac version of this app is great too

Hi, it turned out to not be an issue for the OP. He simply didnt compile both the OSS and BIN code (he only compiled the BIN).
