I'm hoping that the issues with these discs is resolved. I nearly bought it during the last 50% off sale, but hopefully if Criterion replaces any bad discs they will be cleared from existing stock.

After getting a replacement for The Royal Tenenbaums 4K, I was able to rip the set. Here is how it layed out: https://thediscdb.com/boxset/the-wes-an ... iterion-4k

On my first purchase of the criterion set, I wasn't able to rip three of the films:

The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
The Royal Tenenbaums

Thankfully I was within the return window from Amazon and just went ahead and grabbed a replacement set. With the new set, The Grand Budapest Hotel finally ripped just fine, but Life Aquatic is presenting an IPC error. Supposedly, this happens when the drive loses connection with the OS, but I'm skeptical of that, given the drive has worked just fine with my other discs. I'm thinking this still might somehow be an issue related to the disc itself, although I'm not sure of the how or why to back up that theory.

As for Royal Tenenbaums, I haven't tried it yet. I might just opt to do another replacement, although it's a bit of a pain to do all that with Amazon over and over again.

Grand Budapest Hotel 4K: read error at the same spot on two drives, but plays fine in a standalone player

Adding my results in case it helps anyone narrow this down.

Error
  • Main feature 00009.m2ts (~75 GB) fails ~31% in, at offset 24,432,476,160
  • Code: Select all

    Scsi error - HARDWARE ERROR:441E
  • Read rate drops to ~0.0X; it never recovers
What I tried
  • Pioneer BDR-S13JX (fw 1.03), MakeMKV 1.18.3: fails at that offset
  • LG WH16NS40: same result
  • Plain Finder copy (no MakeMKV): stalls at the same point (32.99 of 87.2 GB, which works out to the same offset)
  • Standalone 4K player ([PLAYER MODEL]): played 20:00–40:00 closely with no visible freezes, skips or artifacts
  • Criterion: declined a replacement, saying they've had no complaints about the disc
My read on it
Two computer drives from different makers fail at the identical offset, but a player reads through it. That suggests a marginal area on the disc rather than an unreadable one, readable at playback speed and/or covered by the player's error concealment. Several posts here mention Grand Budapest stalling, so it may be a pressing issue, not just my copy.

My disc's hub codes (clear inner ring)

Code: Select all

(1298428) CC3705UHDBD-15RDR0 02E [outer line]
(1298429) CC3705UHDBD-15RDR0 01E [inner line]
Questions
  • Has anyone ripped Grand Budapest 4K cleanly? If so, which drive?
  • If you succeeded, could you share your hub codes so we can see whether failures cluster on one pressing?
