Hi all,
hopefully someone could offer some advice on this drive
Drive Information
OS device name: \Device\CdRom0
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-X13U
Revision: 1.00
Serial number: ...
Firmware date: 2021-12-19
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 76
LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: Pioneer RS9401
Firmware version: ID43
From what I understand being on an early pre-22 (barely) firmware this should be suitable to use?
I did see in another thread (
viewtopic.php?t=27378&start=345) Mike requested users to email dumps of their drives (which I did to the support mkv email address).
Any information would be appreciated.
There doesn't seem to be any X13U firmwar ein the current list but Mike should be able to add yours as it is pre Dec 2022. Yeah, email the firmware dump to him as the MakeMKV application suggests and give him a week or so and hopefully it gets added.

Hey all,
Reading through this thread, I'm not too sure where I stand on my new drive.
Will this drive work to back up my Ultra HD Blu Rays?
If not, should I return it to Amazon while I still can or will it be crackable in the future if I keep it?

No, return it. It has firmware post 11/2022 and is therefore not compatible.
This has been worked on for 2 years now and is looking more and more unlikely.

You should return any that have firmware dated 12/2022 onwards as they are not compatible. Essentially all Pioneer drives from retail stores will have firmware that is too new. The only way to get a compatible Pioneer is from a seller on this forum.

yeah sorry man that wont work i would return it if you can i sill have pioneers with old fw if you want one
Cannot return. Found the Verbatum (Pioneer ODM) one and grabbed it. Works.
On the Pioneer, no as in "never", or no as in "going to be a while"?

Well it has been 2+ years so far so it isn't looking good.

What is the technical reason the firmware can't be changed? Are they blowing eFuses or something? Can the Pre 2022 drives be downgraded? If so does that mean they made a hardware change post 2022 in addition to the more secure Firmware?

The feature of "install new software" has been removed/disabled by Pioneer. If you replaced the chips, you could do it, but how many people want to desolder/solder chips?

WAIT! Your telling me that you can flash the chip outside the drive with a flasher and then solder it back?
"but how many people want to desolder/solder chips?"
I just did fine pitch soldering of a N64 NDMI Kit and am planning on installing a Flash Upgrade for the Nintendo Zelda Game and Watch which is removal of 8-WSON package. I can do it!
Has anyone attempted to find a working flasher that can write to the chip outside the drive?
Whats the chip look like? If someone has done this and documented with pics, I go run to the store and buy Pioneer drive right now!

its not that simple either its a smd 128 pin renesas R8j32740fp42 chip not sure if any off board programmers support it
and even then since all pioneer fw is encrypted how would be get it not to be or does the chip take it like that not sure

Woodstock made it sound like in his last post that someone has already confirmed that desoldering and replacing chip works which is why I was open to doing it, my point was that its not a skills gap for me.
Is it confirmed that the renesas R8j32740fp42 has firmware?
I have not heard of many vendors putting firmware inside the main MCU as it normally increases the cost of production significantly.
Xbox 360 designers did this after they were compromised and the cost became worth it:
https://youtu.be/U7VwtOrwceo?t=342
Would Pioneer do this? They are not custom vendor with too much chip design capability right? They buy mostly off the shelf parts like everyone else. The renesas chip, the motor control IC, everything else is off the shelf. Maybe the renesas chip had built in feature for flash (if confirmed that it has the flash)
Found this (looks like someone here probably took these pics):
https://imgur.com/a/jMDrp0V
If you scroll all the way to the bottom pics you will see IC402 which is that AR15F6 chip. Looks like flash chip?
Anyway has someone already tried swapping chips with an old drive to see if it works?
How about reversing the flash program to see why it refuses to accept old firmware?
