Weird problem with my drive, please help

#1 Post by Class316 » Fri Oct 16, 2020 8:44 am

So I bought a "UHD friendly" LG WH14NS40 blu ray drive. It is internal and I use a SATA to USB converter.

This is the information according to MakeMKV

Drive Information
OS device name: E:
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: ASMedia
Product: ASM105x
Revision: 1.02
Firmware date: 2115-12-11 15:03
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 61

Now here's what happens. I put in a 4K disc. It reads. So far so good. But I just leave it in my drive, do nothing else for a few minutes except maybe browse the contents via Windows Explorer, and it freezes, the light keeps flashing, it makes the scratch sound, essentially the drive treats the disc as if it's trying to read a bad disc. I have to eject to free it up. Then I close the drive and it reads it again. And like clockwork it does it again after a few minutes.

Here' a video with what it does: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1I4gpKD ... oM-kO/view

I had an old laptop with Windows Vista. Plugged the drive to that, same thing. So that eliminates any issues with my PC.

This only happens with 4K discs. I tried two different 4K discs and same thing. I tried with a regular blu, and this did not happen. Tried with a DVD and CD did not happen.

Here's the kicker though. If MakeMKV is running, it takes MUCH longer for this to happen. Like, if I weren't trying to test it I probably wouldn't realize it. To boot, I was able to rip 4Ks twice with MakeMKV no issue.

If I leave it idle with MakeMKV open it will happen again eventually though and I will have to eject the disc.

Any ideas why/how or what could be the cause?

Sleep bug as stated in my guide if you leave a UHD disc idle for 2 mins that will happen the solution is in there to fix it to

How is it more damaging I have flashed 100s of wh14ns40 to WH16NS60 it is an upgrade in everyway unless you use other rippers that don't support it

I tried to flash a simple SD card reader using firmware from the manufacturer's web site (cause it wasn't working on my new Windows 10 PC). Ended up killing the device. So I'm afraid to flash hence why I bought this internal drive already flashed and UHD friendly. Rather have paid 30-40 premium than risk it myself.

The sleep bug is annoying in principle but really has no practical effect. The only reason I'd ever need to pop a 4K disc in the drive is to rip it with MakeMKV and that seems to be working flawlessly. In fact I'm 25+ minutes into ripping my ET 4K disc as I'm typing this. So as far as flashing my drive goes I'm going to go by the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy.

Also, if by some miracle a new software player comes out that plays 4K discs on the fly, I imagine it has the same effect as running MakeMKV in terms of the sleep bug.

Well sorry to tell you but you bought from a person who does not know what they are doing almost all the drives I shipped had no sleep unless they used rippers it was not compatible with.

A software player to direct play uhd discs already exists multiple even makemkv can even be used as the decrypter but none of them fix the sleep bug so if you pause the movie plan on ejecting the disc and remembering your time code to skip back to it.

I also offer remote flashing for $25 and I can fix the sleep bug for you I'll even give you a drive if yours dies during flashing

Yes I'm aware software players for direct UHD discs exist. I should have worded it better I meant software that everyone can use to play UHD discs (like what exists for DVD and blu). This doesn't exist and from what I understand probably never will.

Seems mine checks out here.

So for those 3 conditions
1. Make sure your Drive was built after 2015

Mine says it was built April 2020
2. Drive Platform MT1959<Most important
Make MKV says it is
3. SVC NS50+ LG only
It's an LG drive

So going by all these condition my drive does pass to get cured of the bug.

Unofficial UHD playback is a thing? How so? Please enlighten me. Everything I searched online points that it's basically impossible.

You yourself are already doing “unofficial” playback of UHD content as discussed in this thread:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 12&t=23427

Which you also started. Slow down, continue doing what you are doing if it’s working for you, or you’ll just confuse yourself even more and possibly break something. I have seen it happen way too many times already to people who don’t seem to have a full grasp of what they are doing. Understand what you are already doing first and foremost. If it ain’t broke don’t try and fix it.

Then, if you still want to learn more on the differences between “official” and “unofficial” playback then research Intel SGX requirements and compare that process to what you are currently doing. Which was also discussed in this other thread:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... est#p97306

Also started by you. Then the differences should become very obvious. You are currently going in circles here all by yourself.

Not going in circles. I was thinking he was trying to tell me on the fly unofficial playback is possible
