To trigger Dolby Vision it must be single video channel or will work with dual video channels?
(the new Plex beta)
I would like to know the answer to this as well. Mine are dual video channels and not working in kodi or the new Plex beta.
If by dual channel you guys are talking about the BL and EL being on separate tracks, then no it will not work. Not on the Shield at least
Thanks for clarification!

It sounds like there is a way to turn a dual layer into a single layer, but I've having a hard time finding out the process. Could you possibly point me in the right direction?

When you rip your disc with makemkv 1.52 and above, it will automatically merge the two layers that're on separate tracks onto a single track, but the resulting file will still remain dual layer. If you further need a single layer file (they cannot be merged, the EL can only be discarded), then you will need to use yusecope's tool.

Is this because there is no player that supports BR DV (profile 7 w/dual tracks & layers) when it is in an MKV or is there some other reason for this behavior?

So I have an issue. I can't support DTS or DTS-HD (but can support TrueHD including ATMOS), AC3, Stereo.

I am enjoying watching the Dolby Vision backups as most of them are TrueHD Atmos. There are a couple that are not and are in DTS-HD or DTS 5.1.

I use the mac version of MakeMKV 1.15.3. Is there a way to convert the audio for DTS and DTS-HD to AC3 whilst retaining dolby vision with 1.15.3?

I tried FFmpeg to pass through the video and convert the audio only, but that lost me Dolby Vision.

Therefore, I figured I'd ask if MakeMKV for Mac can do it. I've googled but can only find posts that are 10 years old on this subject and are unrelated to Dolby Vision and the above. Thanks in advance.

@Larrikin, can your player handle FLAC? MakeMKV can convert audio tracks to FLAC.

It’s mostly BR players that have dual track support (x700, oppo, etc) and for some reason, the LG OLEDs internal player (MP4s only). Since BR players rarely get updated to begin with and DV in MKVs is a relatively new format, the chances of them being supported is pretty much none. Dedicated streaming boxes on the other hand have no reason to include this support because it’s never used as a streaming format, and it also seems to me that it’s more of a hardware limitation than a software one.

Unfortunately not. I have an LG CX 77" TV and SONOS ARC. That's the limitation.

1. Create your MKV using MakeMKV
2. Use ffmpeg to convert the audio track to AC3
3. Use mkvtoolnix to mux the audio to the mkv.

You should now have a DV mkv with AC3 audio
Cheers :D

@Larrikin, you can get MakeMKV to convert audio to LPCM via ffmpeg.

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 10&t=23222

I think your Sonos Arc will take multi-channel PCM streams when using HDMI eARC.

You could also use the same methodology to create a multi-channel AAC I suppose. There's a built-in profile to make AAC stereo already. You could use it to at least get some sound for your movies that only have DTS.

Hello, is there a player on PC that decodes Dolby Vision currently?
Because with the RTX 3080 and MKV with DV, it's the last barrier to play DV on PC.
Or the only way to decode DV is TV, box, and next consoles?
Thx.

That's for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately that's overly complicated for me to do. I did have a look into it though.

Also, when playing with ffmpeg with the originally ripped MKV from MakeMKV, I lose Dolby Vision. It must be something the way ffmpeg works. I did some testing when I converted the audio with ffmpeg but didn't touch the video. It still killed Dolby Vision.

I truly was hoping that MakeMKV could do it in one shot. Rip the disc and convert the audio simultaneously. I have Casino Royale as a great example. It's in Dolby Vision with DTS-HD. I need the DTS-HD converted to AC3 5.1

Thank you too for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately the Sonos ARC doesn't support LPCM (yet). They say its coming, but when who knows. That would solve my problem. The ARC also doesn't support AAC. Not interested in stereo. I would just love to transcode the audio to AC3 when its DTS-HD or DTS 5.1.

True HD (Atmos) and True HD in general are supported by the Sonos ARC so no need to transcode those.

As just stated in the previous post, I was hoping that MakeMKV in one shot could convert the DTS-HD, DTS audio to AC3 5.1.

I know what you are saying. You lost the DV because you used the video after processing in ffmpeg. I am saying use the video from makemkv and only the audio from ffmpeg. You use mkvtoolnix to mux them together and de-select the DTS-HD audio at the same time. You then end up with a DV MKV with AC3.

Steps:
  • Create MKV using MakeMKV.
  • Use ffmpeg to convert the audio only. Here is a simple command for you.. (ffmpeg.exe -i "your/newly/created/mkv/file.mkv" -vn -sn -c:a ac3 -b:a 640k -map 0:1 "output/your/encoded/audio.ac3") Now the audio wil be converted and you should have an audio.ac3 file.
  • Now open mkvtoolnix, add the mkv you created with MakeMKV, deselect the DTS-HD audio track, add the audio.ac3 file and mux to a new mkv file. This file should retain the DV (as you are using the MakeMKV generated mkv file) and now have only an ac3 audio track.
Cheers :D
