Heads up for old Asus BW-16D1HT with 1.01 firmware

Post by ferrari2k »

Hi, I recently was pointed out by a friend that UHD drives on the PC are not able to read 4K discs right from the factory.
After we managed successfully to flash his drive, I thought I'd have a look at mine.
After an extensive search and a lot of uncertainty I found this thread:
https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 19&t=18856
In the list of the last post my drive BW-16D1HT with firmware 1.01 is listed under the section labeled "upgrade required - MK firmware available".
So I thought "great, just flash it with the new firmware and off we go".
Yeah, well, I soon realized that was a big mistake and I came to the conclusion I quite frankly bricked it, because the 3.x firmware is definitely NOT compatible with that old drive, as I found out with different forum searches I hadn't done before.
Shame really, was working really well.
Oh well, that's my bad and on me (who else), but whoever is responsible for those posts should consider not listing that drive with that firmware as compatible in any way.
At least that may reduce the number of bricked drives in the future ;)

This is false official UHD drives read UHD discs right out of the factory with no flashing.

Anyway you can now easily recover that drive with the sdf tool built-in to makemkv and the GUI from Marty.

Well, my friends drive didn't, the Windows Explorer showed an empty disc.

I see several references to my drive name, but none regarding the firmware being too old. If you might point out, what I missed?

I tried a few things, but failed.
Mainly because I didn't manage to find the original 1.01 firmware to flash and am unsure which drive mine is identical to so I could use an old firmware for my drive.

Well your friend does not have a WH16NS60 or BU40N then those are the 2 official UHD drives that work with makemkv

Yeah you missed a build date of 2015+ in the before you flash section
And
Drive platform mt1959 not mt1939
Yours will now show 59 but that's because you flashed it wrong

Well if you can't figure out a remote recovery from me is $25

Yep, I must have misread that. There's my bad ;)

And you are right, my friend does have a different drive.

As for your offer, I will consider that, if I choose to do so, I will contact you, thanks a lot :)
