Question about a drive I bought

Well I feel dirty cause I spent just under $110 for an internal LG WH14NS40 blu ray drive plus SATA to USB 3.0 converter. The firmware has been patched so it's "UHD friendly" meaning I can read 4K discs and rip with Make MKV.

This seemed like the best compromise without paying a ton of money. Plus I need a drive to read my old discs, both CD and DVD.

The way things are going, this may be the last optical drive I ever buy. Or at least the last one I pay more than $20 for. Physical media is dying. PS5 comes in 2 forms, with and without a drive. This is in my opinion the beginning of the end. I predict PS6 comes in one form.

Now I have a question. This blu ray drive can read 4K discs.

Cyberlink also lists the requirements in their website.

—Then the way most people do around here, which means decrypting the disc first. As removing AACS protections changes the dynamic and adds several options. At which point “On the fly” playback would be possible with the right apps using just about any decent PC.

The so called official way is rife with problems. It took a full windows reinstall to get powerdvd to work on my fully compliant system. And it only works with the intel side of the house. Of course once the protection is removed the nvidia side of the house becomes viable. Rip to folder works. I use another product for real time decrypting on the fly which also makes powerdvd forget about protection requirements.

That being said powerdvd sucks. Personally I use jriver mc which makemkv can integrate with for full playback. Using madvr I get the best possible picture quality.

bah. Thanks all I think I'll stick to ripping and forget about Power DVD and forget about playing officially.

What fools they put all that DRM and shoot themselves in the foot at a time when physical media is probably going to die.

That's pretty much the conclusion most of us came to. I rip everything to MKV and play it off my NAS in JRiver. Streaming like expereience with UHD like quality. Can't beat that.
