Is there a reason then to get the more expensive one vs the cheaper one if both of them can do the job.
Or the price difference is just a marketing gimmick for them.
of the desktop drives no they are all the same except for the ns60 if you want official UHD but still very low quality i have found the best to be the BU40Ns still only 1 defective out of 150+ less than 1% fail rate.
the desktop drive have a 25% fail rate right out of the box for UHD even for ns60s the one that should read UHD
Sorry I was referring to my earlier post. If both of them contain BU40N drives(links below again), just that the more expensive one has a UHD certification and the cheaper one does not, is there any reason to get the more expensive one? I am planning to flash them according to the guide in this forum.

No reason to go with the more expensive one unless you plan on official UHD playback

When search I saw the bp60 was about the same price, but it seems LG just decided the put new software on same drive and release as new model.

I purchased the below from the list of recommended drives, but I don't think this enclosure actually accepts commands from flasher tools.

Archgon MD-8107S-U3-UHD, UHD Official, External Slim 9.5mm USB 3.0-Marty
https://www.amazon.com/Archgon-Premium- ... 0480401890

I've tried several different flasher tools and .bin files and each time the process errors out before it starts.

Now the real question what firmware were you trying to flash
The year thing is normal but through your power shell you incorrectly had enc on.

Any thoughts on what's going on? Or do you figure they've changed something about the drive?

I apologize if this is answered somewhere else but I followed the guide and did WH14NS40 > WH16NS60 1.02MK which works (though read errors on some bluray discs I think based on other thread due to unlimited read speed so will probably downgrade makemkv). I followed guide and used the older 1.02 firmware but noticed the latest is actually 1.03 MK. What is the difference between the two and is it worth upgrading to 1.03? Mostly just use drive to rip blurays (non are actually UHD). Thank you.

Please don't. Leave your drive right where it is. Also, no need to downgrade MakeMKV, just use speed control to lower the max read speed for UHD, specifically triple layer. It should help. (You did say you're ripping mostly BD, so, you can control the speed of those, too, and lower it until you find a reliable speed)

So I goofed... I have a LG WH16NS40. It had a 1.04 firmware on it. I downloaded the Asus firmware tool from a different forum page from makemkv, I selected the wrong firmware downgrade from the list. Instead of selecting the correct one, I selected "DE_LG_BU40N_1.00" and installed that firmware. I see that this post has warned that this could brick the system, but I didn't know this guide existed until after I apparently bricked the drive. My question is, is it actually bricked? If it isn't what could I do to fix it? Thank you all and yes... I understand I should have been more careful with my firmware update. Thanks

Try the sdf tools recovery option

and if you cant get it to work you can send it to me to recover for free we will use it as an R&D drive for the new way of unbricking it
