Is it possible to use a Shared BD drive from a dif computer?

Post by lumine01 »

I bought the HP BD240I Blu Ray Combo Drive to install in my older powermacG5, in order to "share" the drive with a newer iMac running MakeMKV. The drive and disc are both viewable from the G5 as well as from the iMac. However, when I try to "Open Files" from within MakeMKV and point it to the drive/disc on the G5, the "Open" button remains greyed-out. Is there a specific file within the disc I need to find/highlight to activate the "Open" button?

Thanks for any help!

It's not possible with your setup. In theory MakeMKV can use a drive shared on another computer but you need to run a special sharing application on a computer with the drive.

Actually, apparently I wasn't going down far enough into the folder. Once I opened the BDMV folder, it let me select either "index.bdmv", or "MovieObject.bdmv". [Stupid question: Where, specifically, should I be pointing MakeMKV *to* to begin ripping a BD movie? I was just guessing it was the "index" file, since that was one of my 2 selectable choices...] When I tried to "open" index.bdmv with MakeMKV, it gave the error:
MakeMKV v1.6.2 darwin(x86-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /Users/closet/MakeMKV_log.txt
Optical drive "DVD-ROM MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8124 DACH" opened in OS access mode.
Opening files on harddrive at /Volumes/HOW_TO_TRAIN_YOUR_DRA/
Evaluation version, 30 day(s) out of 30 remaining
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
DEBUG: Code 0 at 2Qz]0:?w{[bdz/z@:121263590
DEBUG: Code 0 at 2Qz]0:?w{[bdz/z@:29396943
Failed to open disc
So I'm guessing the only reason that failed was because I don't have the AACS key for the movie in my AACS directory? What percentage of Blu Ray movies should I realistically expect to have this problem with? In this case, the movie is the US version of How to "Train Your Dragon", for which I managed to find a French key on Doom9's Forum (which I tried adding to my AACS directory, but got the same error.) That was the only place I could find any keys.

Thanks again for your help, and for an awesome program! I used it extensively to back up my DVD collection and it worked like a charm! :)

Edit: I just tried to rip "Inception" and "The Lovely Bones" and they both failed, as well. Here's the log from after attempting "The Lovely Bones":

Does every Blu Ray that I rip need to have a key in the AACS directory?

Please see http://www.makemkv.com/faq/item/11 . You don't need any keys if you open disc directly from MakeMKV. You will need to find and enter keys manually if you open files from the disc.
