The Office Season 8 Issues

I've been having issues with my copy of The Office Season 8 on bluray. I've already exchanged my copy once, and the problem persists, so its not the disc. When I first insert the disc inside the drive, before I even tell MakeMKV to scan it, it takes a long time to be read, and I get these errors.

MakeMKV cannot correct hardware errors:
Error 'Scsi error - HARDWARE ERROR:TIMEOUT ON LOGICAL UNIT' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00312.m2ts' at offset '0'

The usual cause of such things is when the drive is trying TOO hard to read a sector of the disk, and fails to respond to the operating system in time. The OS says, "Oh, the drive has disappeared!"

Cleaning the disk fixes the majority of such errors, unless the disk itself is flawed.

I recently purchased this set used. I am having similar problems. On my MAC, the disk reads "forever" and never shows up in Finder. If I try to manually eject the disk or power off the external optical drive, the OS crashes!

I tried these disks on my Windows 10 laptop (different optical drive) and the disk never shows up in explorer.

However, they made these disks, they seem unreadable on non-Bluray players.

I have both a WH14NS40 running 1.02 and a WH6NS40 running 1.04. Both of the drives exhibit the same behavior and errors.

Has anyone come up with a solution?

Just wanted to add to my last post. I purchased The Office Season 8 from Amazon https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1

This set consists of double sided disks with blu-ray being on one side of the disk and dvd being on the other. I read several of the reviews and saw several people complaining about the disks not working.

I though maybe it was an issue with a security feature that the disks had that MakeMKV couldnt overcome but im starting to think it might be poor quality disks. I am going to try to put my disks in my old standalone blu ray player tonight and see if they work there. I will report back with my results but can confirm the disks don't play in Windows 10 on 2 different Blu-ray drives.

Found a small workaround by taping the DVD side with gaffer tape, then trimming around the edges thus making the discs less transparent. So far ripping individual episodes rather than all chapters together has worked for me. My guess is that the laser is picking up too much information and confusing the drive from the DVD side. Using an BD-RE ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.02. Will update if fully successful.

Here in the UK the American Office version was well ahead of us here so for the final seasons (6 onwards) we were getting the US version off ebay. At least 2 seasons (including season 8 ) were Pirate copies, damn good ones with all the packaging and printed discs etc , but they were pirate. The ripped file sizes were much smaller that the other legit season episodes. I seem to remember that was more difficult than normal to rip. To summarise, the US version of The Office was pirated a lot, and there are a ton of fakes out there and almost impossible to tell from the real thing.

Has this solution worked for you. I usually always rip individual episodes so would this help me get them ripped?

I made it through all but disk 3 painstakingly. I kept spitting the disc out, ripping, then repeating with multiple attempts. I found more success selecting a single episode then ripping rather than hitting all 4-6 episodes at once, if that makes sense. Also for what it’s worth, lining the disc in drawer/shelf paper worked much better than the thicker tape as I used before. There were times when it was trying to read for a good 5-10 minutes before any disc info loaded.

okay good to know. i might have to try this out and see how it works. if i would to use the drawer/shelf paper would i just use tape to put it on? is there something i should use here?

I used drawer liner that was already sticky. Wallpaper would work too. A thin giant sticker essentially.

I didn't have any sucess with this method however my order of the office complete series on blu-ray came in this morning. I hope this will have a season 8 that will make it alot easier to use on makemkv.

If anyone is still having issues with double sided discs like these, I managed to get most of The Office Season 8 ripped using the blu ray side. To start, disc 3 and 5 were no problem, DVD side was no problem. Disc 1 would never work on my WH16NS60 with 1.02 firmware. These steps might still work with other drives though. What ended up working with disc 1,2, and 4 was an external drive I didn't even get for ripping movies, and even it was still troublesome. This is the drive that worked: https://a.co/d/8Wu7nXg

The steps that worked for me:
1. Unplug the drive - no disc inserted
2. Restart the computer
3. Plug drive back in
4. Insert disc and let it load for a moment
5. Open Makemkv and everything works like usual
- It took about 4 hours to rip one disc but it finally worked
- Repeat the same process for each disc. For some reason it would never recognize subsequent discs.
