Most people will likely understand this inherently but it should be noted for those that may wonder why the picture "looks dark" with this fix, if you're on an LG display while this fix is enabled, you will want to change the Black setting to HIGH in the picture mode. Because black is getting expanded to full (obviously, I know). I'm using this fix right now with Top Gun. Man, this is bliss.

I didn't change any of my LG C8 Dolby vision settings and there was no brightness or black level difference at all. But I only tested with true profile 5 DV which is encoded in color range ''FULL'".
I have to try with a uhd-bd remux which is encoded in a "limited" color range but my x700 also send those uhd-bd DV in RGB FULL, so I don't expect any difference(at least not with MEL movies).

Apparently they're testing it internally and said removing the BT.2020 flag did not make a difference on their end.

that's surprising. The vertex definitely fixes the DV red push on netflix, disney+, movies anywhere... So I guess the vertex is doing more than just removing the bt2020 flag..

I realized later that the black level when the TV is in Dolby Vision mode is greyed out and locked. So it would appear that it doesn't matter.

That's what I'm thinking as well. It does make a noticeable difference in the screenshots you posted, particularly in the metal on C-3PO so the Vertex definitely fixes it. Either way, looks like NVIDIA is purchasing a Vertex so they can test on their end and see what the Vertex is doing exactly that resolves the issue. Thanks for sharing your findings, I think it's pushing them in the right direction and sooner or later they'll get the colorspace right without the need for additional hardware.

That means, however, that we should be able to play around with the HD Fury settings to see if we can narrow down exactly what the Fury is doing to fix the issue. If it's not that it's stripping out bt.2020, perhaps it's a colorspace change.

fingers crossed for incidental FEL support on the Shield

As far as I know there is no test pattern to tell if FEL active or not.
S&M UHD Benchmark disk has DV demo clip both FEL and MEL versions. It should be good source to spot any difference.

Indeed. I planned on comparing Alita UHD-BD on x700 VS Shield BL+EL+RPU VS Shield BL+RPU VS real profile 5 BL+RPU Movies Anywhere.

The Spears and Munsil UHD benchmark disc is a must have IMO. I use it for testing madvr's tone mapping but it's useful for calibration as well as other things. It's not available for download, no, but, you can purchase it easily enough.

Hmmm, that's a good idea actually. Rip both the FEL and MEL tracks to MKV and run them through the SHIELD using Kodi+ExoPlayer and see if there's a notieable difference.

Ah I see, although there is a chance that the MEL and FEL tracks were mastered differently so you might see differences that're not attributed to the Shield's playback abilities. You might have to check with BDInfo to see if the BL from both tracks are the same size/bitrate, but even then the RPUs might also be different between the MEL/FEL tracks.

Maybe but I've looked at them both on the UB820 and didn't notice any discernible difference. And this is a disc I've looked at a lot. Far more than I care to think about. LOL

Each version was intentionally made with maximum possible quality. So... MEL and FEL BL are not equal - MEL has higher bitrate.
To catch a difference you need to pixel-peeping for compression artifacts.
Peacock feather scene around 3:00 should be suitable for such endeavor.

Yeah that's what I figured, but a comparison of just the FEL tracks on the Shield vs a bluray player should still be valid for our purpose. Actually a comparison of just the MEL and FEL tracks on the Shield should also be of some good use. If they have similar picture like they are supposed to, then it's a good sign for the Shield's FEL capabilities. But if the FEL track looks vastly different, then the EL is probably not being properly applied.
