4 Out of 12

Post by bnormal1 » Fri Jul 24, 2020 7:31 pm

Been purchasing 4k/bluray movie combos for the last 4 months. I was buying the combo's because the price was only a few bucks more than the stand alone bluerays. Problem was, I didn't get a 4k tv until last week.

So once I get the 4k tv I can't wait to rip the 12 movies...4 ripped with no problem. Look great on the new tv.

The other 8...nothing..."no disc inserted"....
Tried the prescribed methods...Tried cleaning the discs with a soft cloth, water, water with dish liquid..toothpaste...last resort guitar polish, pet toothpaste and hand cleaner. Was pretty sure the discs were defective! I have 2 LG drives that are Libradrive enabled. Course I tried the sdf stop on each one...one at a time...thought that might be the problem....nope.

I was pretty confident the retailers weren't going to be much help as it's been a month or so past their return/exchange window. One thing that's almost humerous is that the retailer I bought the tv from wouldn't exchange Braveheart, though I had purchased it from them 33 days ago...past there 15 day window.

As it stands now I'm waiting to hear back from the studios...I did hear back from Universal who had me take pictures of the front'/back of the movie cases...I sent them everything they've asked for and I'm waiting to hear back...

Don't think theres anything left to try...I guess I'm just venting.
Not sure if this matters but here are the 8 that won't work:
1917
Casino
Scarface
Braveheart
The Invisible Man
The Deer Hunter
Gladiator
Hunter Killer

the 4 that worked:
Top Gun
The Call Of The Wild
Darkest Hour
First Blood

That's an abnormally high number of failures. And you said you tried these on two separate drives? Of the 100 or so UHD discs I have, only one has ever given me read errors and that was because the disc had some surface scratches.

Have you done the usual "tech support" steps? Restarted your PC, made sure drivers/firmware are up to date, etc etc? I know that's hardly a solution but I find it very odd that so many discs are unreadable.

First of all, please forgive my ignorance in these matters...

Both LG drives have the 1.02 fw...here is what MakeMKV says for both drives:
Product: BD-RE WH16NS40
LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.02
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

Does the laser try to read the initial info on the disc on the "smooth" part right next to the spindle? I noticed there is a "line" on that part of the 4k disc of the Deer Hunter...

I know this pic sux but it was the best I could come up with....note the strange "line" at the top right of the smooth section....could that cause the disc errors? BTW, that line in the picture isn't as pronounced when you look at the disc...I had to juggle a flashlight under my chin while trying to hit the friggin button on the tablet to take the picture without hitting the off button!

Thanks for the comments!

Just ripped 3 blurays without error. Is it right/wrong to assume that if the drives are able to read bluray discs then the problem isn't with the drives but with the individual 4k discs?

Seems kinda obvious I know but...8 out of 12 4ks aren't working....

thanks

No that is not correct standard Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray are different densities regular Blu-ray is 25-50gb UHD is 66-100.
Most defective drives I have come across only have trouble with the uhd discs

Billycar11, would my 2 WH16NS40 drives read bluray discs differently than they read 4k discs? Does the laser react differently to a denser disc?

Also, based on what you said...my 2 drives may be defective however, they were both able to read 4 of the 12 4k discs I tried. I did retry 2 of the "good" 4k discs and they still work.

Maybe the drives are on their last legs?

yes uhd bluray and regular bluray read different most defective drives i come across only have trouble with only UHD. your drive likely came defective from day 1 you can try cleaning the laser i would say you have a 25% chance of fixing it that way.

also just looked up your movies on https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Gladiato ... ay/200174/
every disk that failed is a BD 100 the hardest disc to read.

Billycar11, thanks for your assistance. I've cleaned the lasers before on these 2 drives...but it's been quite a while ago. I've tried everything else as far as cleaning the discs. So cleaning the lasers are the last thing to try.

Even if the studios I've contacted come through and replace the discs it doesn't sound like it will make much difference.

Man, I wanted to avoid buying a stand alone 4k player!

One of the things you can try now that 1
.15.2 is out is to lower the max read speed for uhd media. Set it to 2x and see if you have any better luck on those troubled discs. This isn't guaranteed to do anything to help but it's worth trying.

Thanks for the suggestion SamuriHL....that is next....

However, after cleaning the lasers on both drives the Deer Hunter is now being read...but it errored the first time I chose what to rip...so then I found a recomendation to copy the entire disc...which is what I'm doing now. It's a 90gb disc thats copying at 8mb/s to a ssd drive...

It should be done around Tuesday!

This is the FAQ I saw:

The simple workaround is to copy all files from the disc to the hard drive manually, without MakeMKV running. If you succeed in this, there is a fast and simple way to convert such copy into encrypted MakeMKV backup that can be opened by MakeMKV later. See our forum for details.

Is the following the correct method after the copying is finished?

Look for the file index.bdmv in the directory BDMV; File->Open Files, navigate to index.bdmv, and hit enter.

Billycar11...if even one of these discs ends up working correctly I'm voting for you in November!

Thanks!!!

I'm not sure that's going to work properly unless you have the bus encryption key. Makemkv stores that in a file when it makes an encrypted backup. Personally I make a protected iso by enabling LibreDrive and then using imgburn. This disables bus encryption allowing the iso to work. Makemkv can then work with the iso.

Billycar11....you may want to start working on the first draft of your acceptance speech!

Hallelujah and thank you Jesus!....and Billycar11 and SamuriHL!

Again, I don't know JACK-SQUAT (c.farley) about this stuff so if someone could explain...

First rip attempt using Makemkv failed...disc read error
Tried to copy the entire disc...got to 25% then failed...disc read error.

3rd attempt...again using Makemkv...I noticed the first attempt at reading the disc using Makemkv that there was an option...first option: movie, audio and subtitle choices and it includes chapter markers...this failed.

Next option on the disc is: movie, audio and subtitle options but NO chapter markers....this worked!

Why?

I'm 61 years old...takes alot to thrill me these days...
The Dear Hunter finally working...I'm thrilled!

again, billycar11 and samurihl...thanks much!

Probably just the continued attempts. Sometimes that's all it takes.

The option with the chapters is looking at the playlist file, which may include multiple streams (m2ts fies). It’ll tell you which ones under “Segments” on the right side window. The other option without chapters is just looking at one stream, so it could be that one of the other m2ts files that the playlist included has been causing issues.
