Hello Everyone,
I'm in the process of ripping all my blu-rays (about 400 discs) to mkv and I've come across an issue with the Alien Anthology blu-ray box set when trying to rip the extras from the blu-ray. (I'm able to rip the movies to MKV). For example, Disc 1 has all the deleted scenes grouped together. I can find that in VLC and in BDInfo, but there is no matching title in makemkv. BDInfo shows that the mpls I would want is 00308.
Normally when I can't find the play all option for an extra, I just use BDInfo to identify the M2TS numbers and the length for each extra, look for the matching entry in makemkv, and rip those titles. This has worked flawlessly with the 300 blu-rays I have ripped so far. However, with Alien the only M2TS in the makemkv title list that matches has a longer length (3:54) than BDInfo (1:35). Just to check I ripped that title to mkv and the deleted scene is there. However, it includes the scenes that occur before and after the deleted scene in the movie, which I don't want. I ran into a similar issue when checking Aliens for the deleted scenes and I suspect I'll run into this with Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection.
Trying to open the blu-ray without AnyDVD HD running to see if the playlist in makemkv would include the missing mpls doesn't seem to work. When opening the disc, I get a "bd + code processed, got Fut(s) for 33 clip" message about 3/4 of the way through loading and nothing happens after that. I also didn't find anything about this issue with the Alien box set when searching on my own so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get the missing mpls to appear in makemkv so I can rip these extras?
Missing MPLS from MKV title list - Alien Anthology Extras
Re: Missing MPLS from MKV title list - Alien Anthology Extra
The possible reason is, that MakeMKV filters this MPLS because the streams segments in the MPLS contains different video and/or audio resolutions or different numbers of audio and/or subtitle tracks. An MKV file can hold/describe only one specifiction for video/audio(s)/subtitles(s) in the MKV header. To store a title in the MKV container all resolutions and settings must be the same.
Good Luck

Re: Missing MPLS from MKV title list - Alien Anthology Extra
Do you have debug logging turned on, and can you post the log here (put "code" tags around the log) ?
There are a number of possibilities. One simple one is that your "minimum title length" is larger than the extras. MakeMKV ignores anything below that size, although it will tell you it is skipping it in the log.

Re: Missing MPLS from MKV title list - Alien Anthology Extra
I don't think it's a minimum title length problem. I checked the setting last night to make sure it was still set at 20 seconds and I also tried running the blu-ray with the length set at 1 second. Plus the 00308 mpls that contains all the deleted scenes runs something like 6:35 according to VLC and BDInfo. When I get home from work tonight I will run the blu-ray again and figure out how to generate a log. I've not used the debug log feature before, but I'm pretty sure I can figure it out.

The FAQ link in my signature explains how to turn debugging on. It doesn't hurt to leave it on - and you will have more detail available to you for troubleshooting problems if it is on.

Here is the debug log from the text file:
I double checked the running time for the 00308 mpls and it is 6:39, not 6:35. It includes the following .M2TS files:
01016 (this is the deleted scene I mentioned previously that shows up as 1:35 in VLC, BDInfo, and when played on my Oppo bluray player. That shows only the deleted scene. Makemkv lists 3:54 which includes the scene before and after the deleted scene)

In addition MakeMKV works faster and more reliably when it decrypts data by itself. It is highly recommended to disable AnyDVD and restart the application.

Re: Missing MPLS from MKV title list - Alien Anthology Extra
It looks like MakeMKV separated out the deleted scenes, rather than choosing the "play-all" playlist. In most cases, this is desirable (episodic TV series are often presented with multiple play lists, including a "play-all" version).
You say that MakeMKV stops working after it finds the fix-up table information, accessing the disk directly. I would ask that you try directly accessing it again (no AnyDVD), and send the debug log and other files requested in the FAQ link to support@makemkv.com for Mike to look at.

Re: Missing MPLS from MKV title list - Alien Anthology Extra
I agree, I also usually prefer separate rather than play all; just not when ripping lots of extras. Actually, I would even be fine with the deleted scenes being separate if they didn't have the scenes from the film attached to them. (Still can't figure out why that extra footage exists in those m2ts files in makemkv.) Anyway, here is the debug log when opening the blu-ray without AnyDVD running:

Re: Missing MPLS from MKV title list - Alien Anthology Extras
Did anyone ever find an answer to this, it seems the deleted scenes Playlist or in individual form do not appear in the selected files to be ripped but are on the disc if you watch on a Blu-ray player.
Edit:
seems this is the same across all the Alien films the Anthology boxset.

Re: Missing MPLS from MKV title list - Alien Anthology Extras
I tried a media converter and even with that it makes the file but it doesn't play correctly. If I do a direct copy of that playlist VLC thinks it's 30+ minutes long but only plays the first few minutes and there's sections without audio. Ripping them individually and converting them I managed to get a few to work. I think something is wrong with how the playlist is formed. I was able to get a few of the deleted scenes to rip but not all. Probably not worth the trouble. I'll experiment a little more.Digital moe wrote: ↑Sat Jun 27, 2020 7:16 pmDid anyone ever find an answer to this, it seems the deleted scenes Playlist or in individual form do not appear in the selected files to be ripped but are on the disc if you watch on a Blu-ray player.
Edit:
seems this is the same across all the Alien films the Anthology boxset.

Re: Missing MPLS from MKV title list - Alien Anthology Extras
I had to create an account just to comment on this as it's been tormenting me for a long while, and on my most recent attempt, I believe I have found a solution via the Windows version of HandBrake.
Normally I do my ripping on Linux using the common workflow of MakeMKV followed by HandBrake, so if you are just wanting raw MakeMKV output files, this may not be quite the solution you are looking for.
I tried everything mentioned in above posts, including backing up the ISOs via MakeMKV and found that VLC could see the deleted scenes as separate titles, whereas MakeMKV could not.
To get them to rip, I noticed after recently installing Windows, that the Windows version of HandBrake will read the backed up ISOs (this never worked under the Linux version). I gave it a try and behold, the titles for the deleted scenes were listed.
Alien, Aliens and Alien Resurrection held the deleted scenes in single multi-chaptered titles which made them easy to process, however Alien 3 only registered them as a single scene per title (slightly annoying as there are 31, but at least they were rip-able).
I hope this helps in some way as it's been a personal headache of mine for some time.
I don't know if there are different pressings/masters of this set but the one I have is a UK version from 2010.

How did you make the ISO? Because I'm still struggling with this and trying to back up the delete scenes from the discs.pieinthesky wrote: ↑Mon Sep 28, 2020 9:48 pmI tried everything mentioned in above posts, including backing up the ISOs via MakeMKV and found that VLC could see the deleted scenes as separate titles, whereas MakeMKV could not.
