Unable to flash Buffalo BRXL-PT6U2VB-EU - Updating Failure #1

Post by Dwayne » Wed Jun 17, 2020 11:43 am

I am trying to flash a Buffalo BRXL-PT6U2VB-EU drive but I am always getting "Updating Failure #1" which seems to indicate an incompatible drive.

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: BUFFALO
Product: Optical Drive
Revision: 1.00
Serial number: WR19 151***
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 28
Date of manufacturing according to sticker on packaging: April 2019

I am using the modified ASUS flasher from here

Firmware versions I've tried unsuccessfully:
- DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin
- HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin
- HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-BU12-OM01001-211902230922.bin
- HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-BN12-0M01001-211905141415.bin

- The drive itself works, I briefly played a regular Blu-ray movie.
- Disabled anti-virus software for the flashing process.
- I have tried 3 different USB 2.0 and 3.0 cables on USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports.
- I have tried it on 2 different Windows 10 computers (Home and Pro, both x64)

Have I missed anything? What else could I do? Upgrade to another official firmware using fwupdateroddpt_102.exe or brdrive_fwupdater_200.exe and go from there?

Looks like it's flashed to me.
It's on 1.00 it comes with bnxx
Stop trying to flash it and don't use those other updaters

Your drive seems to be flashed successfully. Please post a screen shot of the Makemkv splash screen after startup which lists more information.

Shouldn't it say "BNxx" (or "BUxx") as revision and not "1.00"?

Also, the drive should be able to read UHD discs after it has been flashed, right? I am asking because it won't read my so far one and only UHD disc. It's trying to read it for a few seconds and then gives up. Disc looks fine to me.

Yes, I've tried a few DVDs and Blu-rays and they played fine.

You guys seem pretty convinced that this drive has been flashed already. I bought this drive as new but in open box. All of my own flashing attempts resulted in failure #1. This suggests to me that whoever opened the box must have flashed the drive and decided to return the drive for whatever reason. Could it be that the drive is faulty?

Then there is LibreDrive. The fact that MakeMKV shows no LibreDrive information suggests to me that it hasn't been flashed with an MK firmware. Is that correct?

This leaves me wondering what firmware file the drive has actually been flashed with and why none of the BU40N MK firmware versions work?

I'll be getting a few more UHD discs this weekend so I can rule out that my current UHD disc is bad.

You will get better info by makemkv if you just put a regular BluRay disc in the drive. That was the recommendation you got. First things first. UHD will be the next step.

Sadly I've got the exact same Problem as you (I've tried a few more Firmware versions, none worked always Updating Failure #1). I've bought the drive new from Amazon in July 2017, I don't think that i've updated the Drives Firmware. For some reason MakeMKV(v.1.15.2) wont display more Information about the Drive as i saw it doing in other Threads, even with an DVD/ Blu ray Disc inside (Disc Information is shown normally though), with an UHD Blu ray Disc inside it does the same thing as your Drive does. I hope the Information is at least somewhat useful.

Drive Information
OS device name: J:
Current profile: DVD-ROM
Manufacturer: BUFFALO
Product: Optical Drive
Revision: 1.00
Serial number: WR51 8XXXXX
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 64

I hope someone can help.
