The spec for BD says that it can store 50GB. But I have found that some discs rip to substantially more than 50GB. For example, here is my rip directory for Gladiator:

How is this possible? The only way this can be possible in my imagination is some physical area on the disc being linked into more than one file. Can anyone explain? Thank you if you are to help me out.

Seamless branching titles can cause that to happen. For instance if there's a theatrical and director's cut on the disc, they'll share many of the same m2ts files, but, they'll have different m2ts files where the versions differ. With MakeMKV it'll treat the 2 playlists as completely separate, so, you'll get ALL the files merged into one MKV for each version of the movie....which can easily double the space required.

It fits with my guess "physical area on the disc being linked into more than one file" (but at a more logical level), but it answers the question "why" in addition to the "how". No problem at all. Seamless branching is used on some titles and not others. You can always use eac3to to see if it's a seamless branching disc. It'll show you the largest playlists and you can see if it's made up of one m2ts or several. If it's several, that's a seamless branching title that shares m2ts files between 2 or more playlists. Each one then inserts its own m2ts files at certain points. MakeMKV will treat each of those playlists as a complete set, thus duplicating the shared m2ts files.
