I installed the new bin file on my external WH16NS60 running on my mac OSX 10.15.4 through a Thunderbolt 2.0 external enclosure. Drive Information:

OS device name: /dev/rdisk7
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH16NS60
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: KLJJATB*****
Firmware date: 2118-10-29 19:36
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 72

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.02
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

While ripping a BD for the first time it spun for about 5 minutes doing nothing, like it timed out. I ejected the disc and restarted MakMkv. This time it worked great. However, once it hit 10.9x, I received the following error:
Program reads data faster than it can write to disk, consider upgrading your hard drive if you see many of these messages.

It looks like my internal Samsung SSD could not keep up with the drive, but that does not make sense. The drive immediately started to back off the speed until it reached 6.5x. Is there a way to limit the speed so this does not happen or is there something else going on here limiting the write speed?

Tried with a DVD now (much easier to see, if it's going max speed, because it has no extras on it. Size: 3893.8 M).

I can't remember having had that error message before on that disc, but the movie extracted without a problem:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.15.1 win(x64-release) started

Is there a way to go back with Libredrive to test, how it was before?

Is this going to be an issue for drive lifetime, in which case this should be a user-selectable feature?

Thank you. I just moved the .MakeMKV folder completely and redid all of my tests:
(BD1 had no extras at all, so the main movie covered nearly the whole disc, BD2 and 3 had many extra clips)
(The error with the DVD does exist on both versions, so it must have been with the disc before as well.)
Drive: Asus BW-16D1HT 3.10 MK
LibreDrive v5:
DVD: 6.2 M/s at 50%, 7.9 M/s at 100%
BD1: 37.8 M/s at 50%, 48.9 M/s at 100%
BD2: 33mins 5secs for 42.98 Gb, that's in average 22.2 M/s
BD3: 20mins 46secs for 27.62 Gb, that's in average 22.7 M/s

LibreDrive v6:
DVD: 16.0 M/s at 50%, 20.5 M/s at 100%
BD1: 37.8 M/s at 50%, 49 M/s at 100%
BD2: 24mins 24secs for 42.98 Gb, that's in average 29.9 M/s
BD3: 17mins 26secs for 27.62 Gb, that's in average 26.3 M/s

Conclusion:
I'm not sure, why BD1 took the very same time. But for the other discs the speed did increase quite a bit.

Yep, there is definitely something wrong with v6.

I've ripped 3 different UHD's (all 2 layer) on my NS60 and they take longer than they did on v5!!

Yes, they do get quite fast (up to 11x) but once they reach the layer change, they all take 18-20 minutes at 0x (still barely reading at 100-200k/s), then after the layer change has completed, they sit on 2x for the entire second layer.

So, what takes about 40 mins on v5, now takes about 1hour15mins on v6.
Cheers :D

Yes there does appear to be some bugs. My WH16NS60 rips triple layer 4ks so fast. Then I put aquaman in and it locks at 2.0x speed.

Take the disc but it in an LG BU40N on v5 libre and it’s ripping at full speed 6.0x. Definitely bugs to squash. But so much promise!!

I suggested this the other day as well. I think the default should be OFF as this could be a warranty killer.

Come to think of it when we flash drives with older firmware revisions that nukes the warranty as well right?

Damnit thinking too much again. Lol

Yep, apparently firmware is not ready for this. The ONLY thing V6 patch is doing (in regards to the drive speed) - it increases the "max speed" variable. So the drive calculates two values for a given media -
1. "absolute max speed" (using the speed table, medium type and BCA information)
and
2. "max read speed" - a locked-down value based on content type.
All V6 does - it copies (1) to (2).
Apparently there is a persistent firmware bug that manifests on layer change and other seek events, that causes permanent seek/sync errors.

So be it then - the "max speed" will be off by default. Will think about UI....

p.s. in my tests NS60 was very stable...

Suggest that the UI include the ability to impose a lower value on "max read speed", for the USB power issue.

I may completely misunderstand as I am new to all of this. I have the MK Firmware for my WP50NB40 loaded up as well as the LibreDrive 6 running with MakeMKV and it will not allow unrestricted read speads. Is my model not supported?

Thank you

Apologies if this is a redundant question at this point. New to the forum, got firmware patched to 1.00 on BH16N60 backing up like a champ, have tried to drop the bin file in the program folder but doesn't seem to work or I'm very well likely playing it in the wrong folder? Only running v.5 What is the newbie missing?

My NS60 is, too. Please allow us the option because I couldn't be happier right now with it on. :)

You're missing the part that v6 and 7 are experimental at this point, and a newbie shouldn't be trying it until it's merged into the "normal" stream.
