How to rip a DVD-Audio disc

Post by bmillham » Thu May 14, 2020 9:26 pm

I've searched the forum and can't find any information about this. I just got a DVD-Audio disc (Mannheim Steamroller Fresh Aire 8 ) and would like to rip it to FLAC. But MakeMKV will not open the disc.

This is what I get

Have you enabled "Allow contacting web server for updates" in preferences? Maybe it just cannot download what it need for decrypting the disc.

Yes that's enabled. I was able to rip the 'flip side' of the disc (the DVD-Video) with no problems. I looks to me like MakeMKV just doesn't like DVD-Audio discs.

BTW, I'm running MakeMKV on linux.

There's a couple freeware options, the one I've used is "DVDAExplorer", try searching for that. DVDFab DVD Copy module in "Clone" mode used to be able to rip ISO files that you can use to make backup discs. But absent dedicated software, a PC drive will not allow you to access the high res content.

Thanks for the hint. I tried DVDAExplorer in Wine, but it didn't work. So thinking back, I tried foobar2000 with the DVD-Audio addon. Then I was able to rip to an uncompressed WAV.

From there I can use Audacity to convert to FLAC.
