There was no problem flashing if your on 1.02 and your drive sees the disk
pc locking up while ripping sounds like a system problem
I thought I needed to use the bin file from MK-FIRMWARE-PACK -> WH14NS40-N650 and use that to get the firmware back up to 1.03. Are you saying that's not needed? I was trying to follow this YouTube tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfpf6HoMMis

I got through all of it except for the ASUS ODD FW 3.02 Updater. I tried it and it didn't work, kept giving me an error. Are you saying that step is not needed?

none of it is needed if your drive has/came 1.02 this whole thing is all about downgrading not upgrading. and since you also can't flash your drive i guess you have it connected with usb?
but yeah if your dive sees 4k disks your good just need to figure out your other problem of locking up in the rip could be the usb adapters psu or something with your system.

but yeah i made the video its is about downgrading i don't say to use the asus tool i say use it if you have an asus drive i just wanted to show both that version probably only works with asus drives. and that was before the new asus tool was out that can flash any fw now.

i have been thinking about making a new better video with the updated flasher and info but i know soon as i do that mike will come out with his flasher just like right after i made the dosflash video we got de firmware lol

Ah, that makes more sense. Well the good thing is that I can see the 4K disc in the drive. The issue is that IW didn't rip, so I decided to check using Pacific Rim: Uprising. Fingers crossed it works and if not I'll attach the logs. I am using the Vantec NST-536S3-BK 5.25 case but I see where that's on the approved list so I doubt that's the issue either. I'll give IW a good cleaning too. I don't own a 4K player so maybe it has some sort of manufacturing issue or fluid/film on it.

3 things it can be
dirty disk - uhd disks are really sensitive to anything on them 1 tiny scratch can kill a disk for ripping
defective drive - i have gotten so many defective i have lost count they had alot of bad batches from 12/15/18 - 2/1/19
bad enclosure - but i dont think it is this

I finally got Infinity War to rip and I'm working through encoding but it did finally work. I did have trouble with Pacific Rim Uprising and have completely given up on that one.

You stated you thought the drive may be going bad. If I start seeing the debug error in logs for UHD discs and HD discs, would that be a sign the drive is on it's last leg? I'm trying Ant-Man and the Wasp now. The disc has never been touched by me and appears to be super clean so I'll give it a shot and post logs if it craps out again.

well its hard if you don't have multiple drives im flashing 5 right now and have 1 defective

my process is if a drive gets a hash error clean the disk and retry see if the error comes back and is in the same or similar location or if completely random - same location probably means disk random places probably means drive.
try in another drive if no error 2 full rips drive is bad

obviously i build on it depending on scenario but you get the idea

Hi all,

Another idiot here... I tried to change the firmware in my WH14NS40 (SVC40) and I've completely hosed the drive. The drive now thinks it's an SVC50 with firmware 1.03.

I've been trying the WIndows PE > DOSflash procedure, but when I try to read the flash, I get a "No known flash chip on this part!" message. I've done all of the necessary preliminary steps: SATA to IDE mode, moved the drive to SATA port 1, etc., but I still can't read the flash.

Have I completely bricked the drive?

Thanks in advance.

Oh Jesus not Julia! LMAO Billy and I are never going to hear the end of this.

Seriously though, VERY glad you got it back up and running and that this worked to save the drive. Hopefully this will help the myriad of others that have run into this issue.
I love Julia, been using her for years! Billy occasionally throws the "too lazy to find the windows 10 PE" I agree yes, I am and carry on :-)

You guys are not idiots for making a mistake while flashing. It happens. Now buying an NS40 in the first place that decision definitely needs discussion :-)
But yeah let's go easy on the name calling.

If you've done al you can do with the drive I'm happy to take a shot at it. Contact info in the link in my signature. You can mail the drive and I'll do some complimentary dosflashing. People were nice enough here to teach me and continue teaching me. Happy to give some back.

Thanks, but are there any other procedures I can try myself before I ship off the drive to you?

This is what I get when trying the DOSflash procedure:

Dumb luck: After poking around the site, I found the way to restore my drive back to working condition:
NS40 Recovery Image:
Flashed an NS50 firmware to an NS40 drive and can no longer read disks this IMG has all the NS40 FW you need to recover your drive just follow my dos flash video guide linked above
https://www.mediafire.com/file/8by2zqop ... D.zip/file
Now my drive is working, but now it thinks it's a WH16NS40 (1.02 firmware) rather than a WH14NS40, which it actually is. Is that a problem?

Also, it still can't read a UHD disc. The date code on my drive is 2014, which apparently doesn't fare well with the entire UHD flashing process. Should I bother trying to make the drive UHD friendly or just give up?

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

NS40 drives are too old. HW CAN NOT support UHD, no matter what FW you try.

Time for me to buy a new one, I guess... With a recent manufacturing date code.
