Curious, How do Extended Editions Work on BD? MKV files Larger than OG BD?
Curious, How do Extended Editions Work on BD? MKV files Larger than OG BD?
Out of curiosity how to moves that have 2 editions work on BD? I have a couple movies like Independence Day that has a theatrical and extended, and I noticed that pulling the two titles out separately makes for a much larger total file (about 70GB) than the BD is itself. Does the BD somehow only save the extra scenes, and knows where to put them into the movie to keep from having to save the movie twice?

The BD have multiple streams, which you can think of as different segments of the movie. A certain version of a movie is then made up those different streams and played in a certain order via a playlist. You can swap out or add in different streams to play a slightly different version of the movie. It's all defined in the playlist. No need to waste space on content that is identical for two slightly different versions of the movie when most of the movie is the same. It all plays very seamless and you can't tell where one stream ends and the next one starts.

If you select a title, look into the right window of MakMKV. You see the "Source File" xxxxx..mpls (Playlist) and a liitle bit below the "Segment Map 1,4,5,8". The numbers describes the stream segment parts xxxxx.m2ts. If you now compare the two titles you can see that the segment maps are a little bit different. With the paylists and stream elements parts the movie is assembled.
Good Luck

from the olden days

but I'm not sure how well all players will play these mkvs.
It be interesting if MakeMKV could recognize when you have a seamless branching title and group them in the UI and allow you to select more than one as well as marking what one considers the "primary".

Each Paylist (MPLS) can have more than one stream segment. In this case you have "seamless" branching. But the "seamless" wording comes from the DVD which works different. The DVD VOB file(s) includes all stream segments in the big VOB file(s) and have ID and pointers to branch from segment to segment. On Blu-ray each segment in stored in an single M2TS file, so the player simply selects a different M2TS file.
f.e. in case you have different angles you have different titles which can be selected.and allow you to select more than one as well as marking what one considers the "primary".
Good Luck

I agree that blurays are conceptually simpler than what dvd implemented. all i was saying was that it be interesting if makemkv could recognize the situation where bluray playlists were sharing streams and give the ability to create these "ordered chapters" mkv files.
