Drive stopped reading Blu-Rays

Post by nhigham »

Hi,

I've used MakeMKV for quite a while and managed to rip virtually all of my disks. Recently it stopped reading Blu-Rays and now I've just checked other Blu-Rays that had previously copied and it can't read those either. I think the first ones I noticed it on were Harry Potter ones, but now it won't read anything. I've found a thread mentioning AACS as being a possible cause and that if a later version of AACS is detected on a disk then it revokes permission for MakeMKV to read any Blu-Ray after that, but I didn't find any solution? It mentioned checking in the data directory for and files beginning "MVB-v" but I can't find any.

Is there any way of fixing this or is the drive now bricked for Blu-Rays?

Thanks,

Neil

It depends. What version of MakeMKV are you running? What version of AACS did you load that revoked the disk key?

In your MakeMKV data directory, look for files that start with MKB and end with tgz. What's the highest number shown after the MKB?

Note that it is VERY unusual for there not to be MKB files in the data directory, unless MakeMKV doesn't have permission to write there.

The best is always, provide a debug log which shows infos and errors.
Good Luck :)

Hi both,

The only file in my MakeMKV folder is _private_data.tar. I've tried changing the location of the Data Directory and restarted MakeMKV but it still just creates the same file. The log messages in the bottom window are below, but it doesn't create the log.txt file either?

MakeMKV v1.14.7 win(x64-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as C:\Users\Neil/MakeMKV_log.txt
Downloading latest SDF to D:/Neil/MakeMKV ...

Can I see a log where you inserted a BD, and attempted to read it, please?

This happened to me a few weeks ago. The solution was to shut my computer down, unplug the AC for 10 seconds, then restart. A restart alone was not enough. I suspect my Asus drive had an issue that required a complete power-off. May not work for you, but if you haven't tried it it's worth a shot.

The one above is when trying to read a Blu-Ray. I've just tried it again and it says the same. The drive chugs for about a minute saying "Disc is being loaded" and then goes to "No disc inserted"

The detection of the disc is done by the Operating System and not by MakeMKV. As long has Windows does not detected the disc, MakeMKV cannot see and access the disc.
Good Luck :)

Looks like the drive must have gone faulty. I've just swapped for an old Blu-Ray drive and it's working again. Thanks for your help.
