How do I actually perform the flash? - I wouldn't be asking if I haven't tried researching it first....sorry :(

Post by outatime »

tl;dr - How on earth do I apply the actual firmware? My drive is unable to read UHD Movies. Do I use DOSFlash?

tl;dr - Just a hair more detail...If I do use DOSFlash...do I then use the MK Firmware? What do I do after that? From what I've gathered, the MK firmware is just an intermediary firmware to allow you to flash other firmwares? Is that right?

----------------------------------------------------------------

Okay....now for the nitty gritty detail.....

Disclaimer: I'm sure this has been posted SO many times, and I'm likely going to be given a hard time. But I've exhausted myself trying to find the answer on my own, to something I was hoping would have a direct answer. To show what I've done so far, I've mapped it out below. I feel like I'm missing a simple piece of information that will help this all make more sense. I'm not new to computers I swear. I understand the majority of how this all works, and what is needed to be done...I just can't find how to actually do it...

Also...as part of writing all of this...I found someone mention "DOSFlash". I wasn't sure what that was, so I googled it, at it appears to be a flashing tool. I couldn't find anything on GitHub to give me more information, but I did find a few websites mentioning that it was patched to handle "NS58" firmwares?

I have read:
What is LibreDrive?
Custom firmware pack with LibreDrive patches

I also read (Ultimate UHD Drives Guide Updated 2019), however, there are a few links that it refers to for "Unlocked Flashers" that I'm a bit lost on. I tried reading those, but I'm unsure if those apply to my drive or not.
Also, within that thread, it has a list of items you need to ensure before flashing, of that list, I can't figure out how to check these two:
  • Make sure your Drive was built after 2015 (I'm assuming that since I just bought it a few months ago, I'm probably ok?)
  • SVC NS50+ LG only (unless this is referring to the last 4 digits of the Model number, which on mine is NS58, in which case, I'm okay? Which mine doesn't appear to be an LG...but I've also read "they're all LG")
I also I searched for my exact model number (BH16NS58) on this forum, and found this comment that is asking about my same issue. But in that thread, someone just referred him back to (Custom firmware pack with LibreDrive patches), which I read. And that person appears to already know how to flash their drive. I checked their account, but it doesn't appear that they've ever commented anything else to help give me any clues.

I've downloaded the firmware pack and identified the one needed for my drive, which I think is:
".\mk-firmware-pack-20191206\MK\HL-DT-ST\BH16NS58\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BH16NS58-1.01-NM00500-211711161545.bin"

I bought the drive from amazon here: Buffalo MediaStation 16x Desktop BDXL Blu-Ray Writer (BRXL-16U3)

Copy paste from MakeMKV:

How will I know which flasher I need to use? Will it simply not work? Or do I need to be careful of using the wrong one and bricking my drive.

Holy crap, it's working! It's now reading HDR discs and is currently ripping.

Omg finally. Thanks Billycar11!!

For a future reader...I followed Billycar11's comment.

I downloaded the "blackened2687 Unlocked Flasher" from the comments of the YouTube video (last link in the video description).

And I used the matching MK firmware for my drive from:
https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 19&t=19113

Then rebooted my computer. And now it's working.

you should just flash it to my de WH16NS60 1.00 or MK WH16NS60 1.02 it fixes the sleebug and rips faster
1.00 has wider ripper compatibility

Is there a reason why my comments aren't showing up in this thread? You're seeing them, but I can't see them?

I didn't think that's something I could do. I thought if my drive is NS58, then I have to use NS58.

Are you referring to this firmware?
".\mk-firmware-pack-20191206\MK\HL-DT-ST\WH16NS60\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin"
you are new user whos posts need to be approved.

no its something you can do if your drive is one of these it can be cross flashed but with a compatible firmware ns60 is compatible with your specific NS58
i have flashed hundreds of WH14NS40 to WH16NS60 ns58 is the same thing pretty much
yes that's one of the firmwares or you can use the de wh16ns60 1.00 one in my pack you downloaded

okay...

So I've asked this question before (setting up Libre-Drive on my Buffalo disc drive/reader) but in trying to do a "flash install" as its put, none of the files I've downloaded from the link provided are compatible with my iMac running on the latest OS. Are there Mac friendly files I can get to upgrade my Buffalo drive to "flash" so I can rip my 4K movies?

Plus, is there a tutorial on YouTube (or other) for Mac? I only ever seem to find Windows tutorials using Windows apps!

Any help would be appreciated.

My MKV app says my drive is compatible but not yet setup.

That is because the publicly available apps for flashing these types of firmwares are only Windows based. There is little to no development for these types of apps for Linux/macOS based environments from both the drive manufacturers down to community/small app developers.

However, you have a few options:

1. Through a VM environment as discussed here:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... cos#p71481

Read that entire thread.

2. Mike has recently been making a sort of "beta" flasher option for macOS available for some interested and capable. Read this post:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=21060

And contact Mike if interested.

3. If you feel this is way beyond your tech understanding/capabilities, then pay someone to do it for you:
