LG BH16NS40 bricked?
LG BH16NS40 bricked?
Good afternoon,
first of all, I think I screwed up.
I have an LG BH16NS40 with the SVC code NS40.
Now I tried (and did) to flash a firmware with NS50 and now no Bluray is recognized at all.
Is there still a possibility to save the drive and maybe even make it UHD-ready?

Thanks for the quick reply!
I just want to make sure: BH16NS40 is not the same as WH14NS40, isn't it?
But theres a link to that tutorial https://club.myce.com/t/dosflash-v2-0-p ... ves/399911
To be on the safe side: This is the right way to try fixing my broken drive?

Re: LG BH16NS40 bricked?
It's not exactly the same drive, no, but, the steps in the link I sent you are what you need to do. You'll need to find the proper firmware for your drive. It's around here somewhere but I don't know where offhand. Use search.
But yea, the upshot is you need to use dosflash to extract your current messed up firmware, get a clean proper firmware that you need to flash, copy the data from the extracted firmware into your clean firmware, and then flash it with dosflash. After that it'll restore the drive to working order.

Ok, thanks!
Unfortunatly, it appears that my motherboard (Asus Prime X370-Pro) doesn't support IDE-mode. Only AHCI and Raid... I think this whole operation won't work with AHCI, right?

Re: LG BH16NS40 bricked?
Thanks, but first I will try do get my hands on an IDE-capable pc.
But nonetheless: I will have to buy a new drive if I want to read UHD-blurays. My old drive won't work whatsoever.
So I'm asking: The ASUS BW-16D1HT will do the job, right? And no matter what firmware the drive ships with I'm able to relativly easily (compared to the Windows PE and data mover method) flash a proper firmware to read UHDs, right?

i honestly can't recommend desktop drives any more the current batch going around is really bad lots of defective drives for now. I even stopped selling desktop drives for now im only doing slims i just got 4 bad asus in a row and 2 bad lgs in a row. i would say your better off with a BU40N and usb case.Daxelinho wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 1:07 amThanks, but first I will try do get my hands on an IDE-capable pc.

Re: LG BH16NS40 bricked?
How do I detect a defective drive? Just because it isn't reading disks whatsoever? Then I would simply return it.
the problem I have with slim drives is the slow reading speed.
At least I would like to try buying a desktop drive, if it doesn't work I return it and can buy an alternative.
So theroatical speaking, if I buy an ASUS BW-16D1HT and it works just fine I'm able to flash a different firmware and I should be good, right? I just want to make sure in advance.

You test with bd 25 bd50 bd66 and bd100 of known good disks and make sure there are no slowdowns or read errors/hash errorsDaxelinho wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 11:33 amHow do I detect a defective drive?

Slim drives are not slow on a bd 66 the bu40n is only 3 mins slower and only 6 mins on a bd 100
I would stay away from the Asus it a rebranded LG nothing special about it LG might even be throwing Asus there extra bad duds I just got 4 in a row bad I'm not exaggerating.
Look right here all the people having problems with the Asus

This guy was very mad at me and said I don't test my drives good enough even though he didn't buy from me lol
Go for the WH14NS40 and flash it to WH16NS60 1.02 mk and if you need wider ripper compatibility then flash WH16NS60 de 1.00 both NS60 firmwares fix the sleep bug on the WH14NS40 and make it rip faster. But if you really want the Asus yes it can flash it just as easily

Do you give away what movies you use to test? I saw in one of your screenshots "The Mummy" from 1999 ist one of the movies you use.Billycar11 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 11:49 amYou test with bd 25 bd50 bd66 and bd100 of known good disks and make sure there are no slowdowns or read errors/hash errorsDaxelinho wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 11:33 amHow do I detect a defective drive?

So I buy a WH14NS40 and flash it with a firmware originally made for the WH16NS60? Sorry that I'm asking but I't seems a bit odd to me that on the one hand you need to look specificly on the lable on the case and one digit is the difference between destroying your drive and make it UHD ready and on the other hand you can take a firmware from a totally different drive. I just want to make sure that I don't do a stupid mistake again.Billycar11 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 11:49 amGo for the WH14NS40 and flash it to WH16NS60 1.02 mk and if you need wider ripper compatibility then flash WH16NS60 de 1.00 both NS60 firmwares fix the sleep bug on the WH14NS40 and make it rip faster. I have to admit I bought the Asus a few hours ago, it should arrive tomorrow already thanks to amazon. The problem with the LG WH14NS40 is that it's not easy to buy in Germany, there's only one place and it costs nearly 50% more than the drive from Asus and will arrive almost in february.
I try to test the Asus as good as possible once it arrives and if it doesn't keep up I will simply send it back and order a different drive.
Re: LG BH16NS40 bricked?
The NS50 svc code series of NS40 drives (god LG seriously?!) has the same chipset (more or less) as the NS60 drive, which is why it works. Those older NS40 drives do NOT have the same hardware, which is why they brick when you flash them. Yes, it's confusing. Yes, it's annoying. But, if you work through the confusion, it's actually fairly straight forward and easy to do. Get an NS50 SVC code series of NS40, and you can flash it to pretty much whatever you want. Got an old NS40 SVC code? Leave it alone.

Re: LG BH16NS40 bricked?
Lets hope so.
May I ask what blurays you use to determine whether a drive works or might be defective?
or does it even matter?
Is a 50GB-BD for example suited whatsoever and the movie has no effect? Or are there movies better than others?
Of course I want to test it with all the possible types. There are 25, 50, 66 and 100, right? Or are there more?

Re: LG BH16NS40 bricked?
Just installed the drive and this happened. I quote my other post in the Guide-Topic:
Daxelinho wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 5:59 pmHi,
I tried to flash my new Asus BW-16D1HT to enable it reading UDH-Disks. It came with the 3.10a software. I used the Ultra Hax0R-Guide from Youtube linked in the first post.
I opened the BH14NS40_N1.00-A4_patched.exe from the Downgrade Enabled Firmware V.2 folder and selected the DE_ASUS_BW-16D1HT_302.bin
The programm worked a bit and after reaching 100% it spit out an error saysing something like write DRAM NG.
After that I opended the ASUS_ODD_FW_Changer_(Modified).exe and from the folder mk-firmware-pack-20191206 I selected the ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014 wich should be the right firmware for my drive.
After this had finished, it spit out another error saying the drive will be in emergency mode.
I opened MakeMKV and popped in a UHD disk and it read the disk without any problem and is currently ripping it onto my pc with 16.8 MB/s and 3.9X
The only curious thing is that MakeMKV says my drive would be the ASUS BC-12D2HT. I don't know why it does that. Maybe one of you can answer this and tell me wheather theses errors are negligible or I should worry and what my next steps should be.
EDIT: The first UHD-rip worked flawless.
