How many TB drive to hold complete GOT series?

#1 Post by ncvideo1 » Mon Dec 16, 2019 10:31 pm

If I want to digitize my blu ray box set of Game of Thrones complete series at full resolution, what size (terabytes) hard drive would I need? I think I read that the series is about 70 hours in length.
Thanks!

Allow for 50GB per BD disc, and do the math. I count 33 BD discs so allow for more than 1.6 TB.

This will be a little bit off since I have season 8 as UHD, but, all my MKV rips of GoT total 887 gigs. So, figure if you're doing them as MKV, about 1TB.

This is an example of how these questions can be subjective. It's based on how YOU want to backup the content. E.g. Full disc versus stripped MKV file or other format/container.

An option is to back 3-4 discs the way YOU want to store them, and then do the estimated math based off of that. Regardless, TB drives are cheap now-a-days.

Also how attached you are to storing the episodes in their full, over-sized state, vs. using a tool like Handbrake to reduce their size.

This would reduce the quality a bit (or a lot, depending on settings). But it can reduce the size significantly.

There are limits to NAS capacity, though. I upgraded to 70TB last year because my 32TB unit was at 90% capacity. The new one is now at 60%, and I don't have any UHD content on it. If it weren't for handbrake, I'd be over 200TB already.

Of course, neither of you represents anything approaching a 'normal' (standard? typical?) use-case viz-a-viz NAS capacity... :D

I realize it's a personal decision, and clearly way off topic for this thread, but, I will always expand storage before compressing. The whole point, for me, of going UHD was to drive every last bit of quality out of my content. Even these GoT discs...season 8 has one of the most horrifically compressed episodes ever made in The Long Night. It was completely unwatchable even on my OLED when it was broadcast. I rewatched it the other night on UHD and man, I gotta tell you, it was like night and day (haha). I realize you can get levels of compression that are "hardly" visible but even so, I want every last bit. If it's NAS worthy, it's worth of not being compressed. I do NOT back up ALL my titles. I own well over a thousand discs at this point and as you said, it'd be prohibitive in NAS storage at the moment. Given that they keep increasing capacity while lowering prices, it's just a matter of time to catch up and I can do the whole library.

I just did this very thing, but went the HandBrake route using "Super HQ 1080p30 Surround" encoding profile. Note: my Season 02 episode 6 had media errors and didn't rip. So I had to rip the DVD version instead, so the below might be light by a Gig or two.

du -hd1
37G ./Season 01
34G ./Season 02
35G ./Season 03
35G ./Season 04
34G ./Season 05
25G ./Season 06
24G ./Season 07
222G .

Woodstock asks if the OP would be wiling to try transcoding, but I think the better question is - does he want to start a Blu-ray collection, but prefers to watch the content from the HDD or is he not planning on buying any other discs in the future, he's just a big Game of Thrones fan and only wants this particular series in the highest quality possible.

If it's the former, then I would strongly recommend buying one of the 14 TB drives because if he buys a 1-2 TB drive now and then quickly runs out of storage, he'll have to buy another one and to save SATA ports, he'll need to trash (or repurpose) the small one anyway so in the long run it's cheaper to buy a big expensive drive now than go through multiple small ones.

If it's the latter and it's just a one-off thing then sure, a 2 TB drive should be enough, they're pretty cheap, he could even get an external one for better "backup to go" options.

Same. If I was OK with lower quality, I wouldn't buy Blu-rays at all, I'd just buy movies on iTunes or other "digital stores"... and yes, I understand that you can of course get much better results if you transcode a Blu-ray movie yourself vs. what you'll get from those stores, but still, IMO it's like buying a Ferrari and then only driving it to the mall, never on a race track ;)
