Any reason not to get the Asus BC-12D2HT instead of the recommended BW-16D1HT as a ripping allrounder?

Yeah it might have 3.11 that some people have trouble downgrading https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 1&start=15
I'm pretty sure 3.10 has worked for some people to downgrade but it seemed not to work for them

Thanks

Hi

Could anybody please confirm my research - the best option at the moment is to buy the ASUS BW-12B1ST and flash to ASUS BW-16D1HT firmware.

There's only one optical drive slot on my PC so ideally I'm after a drive that can read 4k and burn discs. Worst case scenario I'll give up on burning discs.

Why I think the ASUS BW-12B1ST is the best option:

- I was going to buy a LG BH16NS55 and crossflash to Asus as people seem to say the ASUS BW-16D1HT reads a few discs that the LG does not.

- After research I found the LG crossflashed does not burn discs.

- So I thought I'll just get the ASUS BC-12D2HT and flash to the ASUS BW-16D1HT firmware.

- Then I figured that if I'm buying a new drive I might as well just get the latest model, the ASUS BW-16D1HT and downgrade that firmware.

- Then I read that the newest batches of ASUS BW-16D1HT have different hardware to the older batches of the same model, so this drive should not be used (flashing it will brick the drive).

Please keep in mind that whilst this info is out there, it's really hard to find some of it, so I'm looking for confirmation from users here as they are super-informed.

This is incorrect. You have this backwards. This horse has been beaten to death and this topic has been discussed in this forum hundreds of times in detail. And it applies to all drives. Not just that model.

Example:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... ant#p72248

If you feel like you are not understating what is being discussed in this forum in regards to the requirements for UHD BD compatibility for the supported drives in question, then you have additional options here:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=20

As well to purchase “ready-to-go” drives.

No. If you flash it to NS60 firmware, the drive will be "UHD official", therefore not "UHD friendly" and will no longer work with Blu Cloner. It will however work with MakeMKV.
Cheers :D

Does anyone have a link to the LG flasher? Getting a 403 if I follow the link from the other forum. :(

Edit: Nevermind, just used the tool from https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=18933

Just received the drives and both have been flashed using the Unitek Y-1099 USB3-SATA adapter mentioned in the first post. Unexpectedly easy. :D

The LG came with 1.04 so I cross flashed that one with Asus 3.10 MK first before flashing NS60 1.00 DE.

Anyway, thank you for all the hard work on these tools and guides! :D
Thanks mate - after all the digging you post was the final key for my wh14ns40.
Flashed and uhd in 4 mins. Much appreciated! 8

BW161HT
WH14NS40 flashed to NS60
I have these two:
Asus BW-16D1HT (flashed to 3.10 MK)
LG WH14NS40 (flashed to NS60 1.00 DE)

Concur that they're pretty fast. I get 25 MB/s (~5.5x) average and 35 MB/s (~8x) peak ripping UHD66 with these drives so around 45 minutes for dual layer UHD.

When you mention LG WH14NS40 (flashed to NS60 1.00 DE). Would DE_LG WH16NS60_1.00.bin be the same file for downgrading? Because I have the LG WH14NS40 and not the LG WH16NS60.

I am currently on BD-RE WH14NS40 Revision: 1.03 (flashed with MK version HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH14NS40-NS50-1.03-NM00600-211711211658.bin).

Thank you.
