Better to rip 4k and convert to 1080 or rip 1080

Post by Lord Bobbymort » Sun Aug 25, 2019 10:19 pm

Hi, all.

Obviously there are some films I'd like to have uncompressed, but otherwise I'm going to compress most things to save space.

So, in the case that I have a 4k and standard Blu-Ray combo case (Spider-Verse because holy s**t that was good) and I'm going to keep a compressed 1080 and uncompressed 4k, is it better to only rip 4k and then just convert a copy of it to 1080 and compress it, or is it going to bring on more artifacts than just using the 1080p version they've already given me on the other disc?

Thanks,
Bob

Depends. You can compress from 4K to 1080p with higher quality than 1080p Blu-ray. Problem is it's gonna be slow. Heck, none of my desktops can even handle real-time 4K HEVC software decoding (granted, it's been years since I last upgraded).
